High-precision dendrometers are one type of sensor in use in Ph.D. candidate Mpilo Khumalo\u2019s ongoing research.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-685 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/blogsdev.sun.ac.za\/eucxylo\/files\/2021\/06\/2021-06-02-mpilo-blog.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1163\" height=\"794\" \/><\/p>\n<p>We recently installed high-precision dendrometers (see images above), which are a type of dendrometer that provide more than just diameter measurements (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1125786509000344\">Drew and Downes, 2009<\/a>). They show a detailed time-series outlining fluctuations in water storage as well as radial growth by trees throughout the day, seasons and years.<\/p>\n<p>We installed this equipment on each tree in our main multi-species trial in the middle of May and they are already logging good quality data.
