After only one year as part of the Maties Sport High Performance programme the Maties Swimming team won the USSA overall swimming competition for the first time since 2008.

Up until recently the swimming club has run its own OPEC and self-funded HP programme that produced two Olympians and four Paralympic medals in 2012. “The Maties Sport HP program has allowed the Swimming club to expand this program in terms of the number of swimmers being able to access HP services,” said Pierre de Roubaix, head coach at Maties Swimming.

“The HP program also gives us the ability to provide services that were not affordable before. This includes the ability to provide more specific swimming programmes for different specialist swimming groups. It also allows us to provide additional support during training with regards to Sport Science, recovery and strength and conditioning.  During competition we are now also able to provide massage therapy as well as video analysis that was not always possible before.”

Since the new 50m Olympic standard pool was taken into use the club has grown significantly and according to De Roubaix it is nearing its capacity. The goal for 2016 is to stay the number one University team in the country, but it wont be easy. “Tuks will be out to beat us after their defeat last year.”

The main goal of the Maties High Performance programme is not only to take sport at the Stellenbosch University to the next level, but also to help the students become national and international stars. Along with swimming other sports in the programme include rugby, hockey, athletics, netball, soccer, cricket, Paralympic athletes and various individuals from sports not incorporated in the programme yet.

The Maties HP programme consists of three main categories: Performance Management, Performance Enhancement and Athlete Empowerment. There is also Sports Medicine. Performance management is planning, monitoring and evaluation of the high performance programme custom developed specifically for the team, coach and/or athlete and includes quality insurance and special event training programme for tournaments like USSA. Performance enhancement involves strength and physical conditioning, performance analysis, vision and decision training and testing. These training sessions and tests are lab and field based. Player empowerment entails sport-related mental skills training and knowledge development. There is also special academic and development support. Athletes can also rely on a long-term sustainable academic programme. The High Performance programme is focused on the player as a sportsman/woman and a student.

At its heart the High Performance programme is about attracting and retaining top athletes and coaches to an inclusive holistic and elite training environment that will offer them the opportunity to achieve at national and international levels.

Maties Swem baat baie by HP-program
