On Wednesday the Maties cycling team won the USSA title for a third consecutive year after total domination on the road.

This follows the success of the Steinhoff Maties rugby team that finally won the USSA title with its fourth final. The tournament took place in Johannesburg.

In Port Elizabeth the Maties men and women’s team won the road competition. Gert Heyns and Frances du Toit were the individual winners. Riders from Maties won every stage. Max Sullivan won the green jersey as best sprinter en Heyns the polka-dot jersey for best climber.

The Maties rugby team beat Pukke 19-13 in the final played at the Wits stadium. Braam Venter and his team started the week with a victory over CUT (84-7) and easily dispatched Shimlas (50-7) in the semi-final.

It was a thriller of a final against the team from Potchefstroom that eliminated the home university Wits in the semi-finals.

“I am very pleased and relieved that we could win the final. We have come close to winning other for the last few years. To win the title means a lot to us. We can now build on this for the rest of the WP league and what we’ve learned here we can even use in next year’s Varsity Cup tournament,” said Venter.

Maties is now the USSA champions for both 15man and Sevens rugby. Venter was also the captain of the sevens team that won the last USSA tournament for sevens. The USSA Sevens Rugby Tournament is in September this year.

The rugby team is the only team to win a title last week. The Maties cycling team is currently in Port Elizabeth where the team is the two-time defending champion.

Ander USSA-uitslae: Gimnastiek 2de; Pluimbal 3de; Tennis 3de; Netbal 5de; Hokkie 5de; Muurbal 5de; Sokker 5de; Golf 6de; Basketbal (vroue) 8ste; Basketbal (mans) 14de.

Maties Netball hungry for more success : 2015-11-18

The leaps and bounds that Maties Netball has improved with over the past three years, has made the players and coach just more motivated to pursue even greater success.

In the first Varsity netball series Maties finished sixth. Last year Maties reached the semi-finals and this year Christine Behan (coach) and her team played in the final.

For Behan and her players, it was a three-year plan that this year finally came together. “It did not happen overnight. The core of players also put in an incredible amount of work and sacrificed a lot. The team on the court is only as good as the team off the court. The team management and support staff have done an incredible task to help the team and players reach their full potential.”

Behan’s highlights of the Varsity Netball series include the victory over Pukke in the group phase of the tournament and the victory over Tuks in Pretoria in the semifinal. “I am very proud of my team moving up from fourth place in 2014 to second place this year. And of course the home final. That was our main goal at the beginning of the series so it was very special to achieve it in the end. ”

According to Behan the standard between the top five teams was high. “However, I would like to see all eight teams being competitive.”

Looking to next season Behan believes that they just need to build on what was reached during the past season. “The players can benefit from more experience. This will help with consistency and it will make us more competitive. ”

Maties reach first ever Varsity Netball final : 2015-10-13

For the first time ever the Maties netball team will play in the final of the Varsity Sports Netball series.

Maties will take on Pukke in the final on Monday in Stellenbosch. Maties beat Tuks 55-50 in Pretoria; while Pukke got the better of two-times defending champions Kovies in Bloemfontein with 56-48.

On paper Tuks and Kovsies should have won, but both Maties and Pukke showed no regard for the more fancied opponents. Not only is this the first time Maties will play in the final, but it was also their first victory ever over Tuks in this tournament.

Co-captain and key player Juline Rossouw was player of the match. She has been leading by example the whole series and her skills on the defence have played a big role in the success of Maties.

Pukke handed Kovsies their only defeat of the season. It will be the first time Kovsies wont play in the final. This is the second time Pukke will play in the final after they were undefeated in 2013 only to lose to Kovsies in the final.

Maties have been playing better every year since the tournament started in 2013. The first time they finished fifth, last year they played in the semi-final after finishing fourth and this year they finished third on the log, but with a place in the final they can finish no worse than second.

Before the start of the series, the experienced Melandi Pretorius made it clear that a home final is the ultimate goal in the tournament for any team. “We are so ready to perform to our full potential. We are physical and mentally strong and have a great team spirit. We want to surprise a few teams and persons and in the process hopefully achieve more than what was expected from us.”

The previous time Maties and Pukke played against each other this series, Maties won a tight battle 46-39.

The final is Monday at 19:00 in the Coetzenburg centre.

Maties speel in eerste Varsity Netbal-eindstryd

Maties must travel to play Tuks : 2015-10-06

JoPrins

Maties will take on Tuks in the first semi-final of the Varsity Netball series on Monday in Pretoria.

The other semi-final is between undefeated and defending champions Kovsies and Pukke in Bloemfontein.

Maties finished third on the log after losing the final match of the group phase against Kovsies this past Monday in the Coetzenburg centre. Maties fought bravely against their superior opponents but lost 33-41. Finishing third on the log is Maties’ best performance in the series since the start three years ago.

The score is not really a true reflection of how tight this match was. The final two minutes of the match was a power play and before that the score was 33-37. At halftime the gap was already nine goals and against a quality team like Kovsies, that is a big gap.

Maties co-captain Juline Rossouw admitted that they made life difficult for themselves. “We gave ourselves so much to do with a halftime gap like that, but I must give credit to my players who never gave up. We fought hard until the final whistle and I am proud of my teammates,” said Rossouw.

The simple verdict on the match is that Kovsies were more calm and calculated, while Maties played with lots of emotion. While Kovsies were consistent, Maties had periods of brilliance, but struggled in the goal circle at critical times.

It’s never easy singling out a player in a match like this, but Jo Prins deserves special mention. She left if all out on the court and was Maties’ best player.

Monday’s match is at 17:00.

VUT-5696

Maties ready for Pukke, Kovsies

After a convincing victory over VUT in the Varsity Sports netball series on Monday two of the most important games in the series awaits the team of Maties.

Maties won the match easily against VUT in the Coetzenburg-centre. The score was 83-19. Wednesday Maties take on Pukke and the last game before the semi-finals is on Monday against Kovsies in Stellenbosch. The match against Pukke will be played in Port Elizabeth after the previous game between the two teams was unexpectedly brought to an end due to load shedding in Potchefstroom. After several options were considered, it was decided to replay the game.

According Maties coach Christine Behan she is satisfied with her team’s performance, but that there is still some work to do before the last two matches. The results of the matches against Pukle and Kovsies will determine whether Maties get a home semi-final. There is even a possibility that Maties can still finish top of the log. “Yes, there is a chance but we do not think about it. We would like a home semi-final and we have to win the games for that. The match against Pukke is almost like a mini-final for us,” says Behan.

“It is sometimes difficult to play against the so called weaker teams because the game tends to become loose and then the players take unnecessary chances and do not always stick to the game plan. However, we are confident that we can beat Pukke and Kovsies. We work hard and the management looks carefully after the players. It is definitely possible.”

In the beginning of the series Behan’s team struggled with the so-called power play. It is two minutes in which each goal counts two. “Yes, it was a concern, but we’re better at it and I’m happy now with how we approach it. It is no longer a problem area of our game. ”

Maties is currently third in the standings behind Kovsies and Pretoria, but with a game in hand. The match against Pukke is on Wednesday at 19:00. Monday’s clash with Kovsies is at 19:00 in the Coetzenburg centre.

Living the netball dream : 2015-09-11

Jo Prins

Jo Prins

The Maties Netball team is currently participating in the third edition of the Varsity Netball tournament.

Sasha-Lee Petersen and Jo Prins are both playing in their second tournaments. We caught up with them to find out what netball means to them and how they balance their sport and studies.

Defending mid-fielder (WD, GD or C) Sasha-Lee matriculated from De Kuilen High School in 2013 and is currently in her second year of a BA Sport Science degree.

Her dream is to represent South Africa as part of the Proteas team one day. She is currently playing for the Maties Netball 1st team, Western Cape Senior A team and the Southern Stings.

“Netball is a very big part of my life and I am very passionate about it,” she says.

She enjoys being part of Maties Netball. “The unity is so strong and the support is great.”

She balances her netball and academic obligations by using her time wisely. “If I’m not playing netball, I’m studying.”

Sasha-Lee Petersen

Sasha-Lee Petersen

Jo is in her first year of an education degree (BEd). She matriculated from Bloemhof Girls High School in 2013 and also plays in the mid-field, mostly as wing defence (WD).

She would also like to represent South Africa on senior level. As junior she was part of the U/18 SA team in 2013 and she participated in the African Youth Games as a member of the U/19 A team in 2014.

She is currently playing for the Maties Netball 1st team, Cape Winelands Senior A team, Western Cape Senior A team and the Southern Stings.

“I still play netball because I can’t imagine my life without it!” she says.

“Netball is my passion and I get to meet so many incredible people and travel a lot. I would encourage other young people to carry on with their sport after school if they are truly passionate about it. Being a student and an athlete at the same time teaches you important life skills such as working hard, time management, endurance and at the end of the day it makes you a better and stronger person.”

She describes the Maties Netball club as not just a team but a family.

“I don’t know how I would survive university without my Maties Netball family! They are the best support system you can ask for!”

She admits that balancing netball and academic obligations can be challenging. “I’m not going to lie, it is not easy! It takes a lot of hard work, commitment and determination. Time management and prioritising is key. One needs a great support system, because you won’t be able to do everything on your own and must realise very early that it’s okay to ask for help.”

Varsity Netbal het begin! : 2015-09-11

Rossouw is a former Paarl Gymnasium learner who enrolled at Stellenbosch University (SU) in 2011. She is currently studying towards a degree in Education. Netball is her passion and she is not planning on quitting any time soon.

“I don’t think there is anything else in this world that makes me as happy as being between those four lines on court.”

This defender, who represented the Proteas in the Fast Five World Series in New Zealand in 2013, is currently playing for Maties, the Cape Winelands Senior A side and the Southern Stings (in the Brutal Fruit Netball Cup).

As centre she is playing for Maties, the Cape Winelands Senior A side and the Southern Stings.

“Netball isn’t just a sport for me, it’s a lifestyle,” she says.

Both Rossouw and Claassens encourage new students to continue playing sport while at university, and after.

“It teaches you to manage your time, keeps you fit and healthy, offers you a break from your studies and gives you the opportunity to meet new people. To top it all, you also get the chance to be part of something like Varsity Netball,” says Claassens.

The team is coached by Christine Markgraaff-Behan and the squad includes Sasha-Lee Petersen, Jo Prins, Haike Brink, Juline Rossouw, Suné Claassens, Nelandré Mostert, Cari Swart, Saskia Stander, Stephanie Brandt, Somari Els, Charmaine Baard and Melandi Pretorius.
