{"id":1101,"date":"2021-04-08T09:08:21","date_gmt":"2021-04-08T09:08:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/iimbovane\/?p=1101"},"modified":"2021-04-12T09:26:05","modified_gmt":"2021-04-12T09:26:05","slug":"taking-education-outdoors-with-iimbovane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/iimbovane\/taking-education-outdoors-with-iimbovane\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking education outdoors with Iimbovane!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The outdoor environment offers plenty of learning opportunities and what place can be better than South Africa with its diverse environments where learners can spread out and reap the benefits of the great outdoors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">On Monday 15 March 2021, the Iimbovane Outreach Project and<span style=\"color: #0000ff\"> <a style=\"color: #0000ff\" href=\"https:\/\/contourgroup.co.za\/\">Contour Enviro<\/a> Group<\/span> took education outdoors and welcomed a group of Grade 6 learners from JJ Rhode Primary School for an introduction to the amazing world of ants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The day started with a brisk walk around the Jan Marais Nature Reserve in Stellenbosch where the group explored the reserve\u2019s vegetation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">The second part of the day focused on ant ecology and the learners coupled technology and environmental education by using tablets to explore the life cycle, importance, and diversity of ants. (Photo credit: Catherine K\u00fchn)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Then it was time to get creative with crayons and magnifying glasses!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif\">Each learner received a magnifying glass to study the intricate detail of the ants they collected after which they had to draw what they see.
