29 October 2025 \u2014 A group of 33 Imagineers<\/em>, a home-schooling collective from Cape Town, visited Iimbovane today for a hands-on lesson on seeds. The day\u2019s programme took place in the Helderberg Nature Reserve, where the abundance of flowering plants and trees provided the perfect outdoor classroom to talk about seeds.<\/p>\n

The day began with a scavenger hunt where each Imagineer <\/em>had to spot and collect a list of items along a short hike. The scavenger hunt caused lots of excitement and some of the Imagineers <\/em>returned with hands full of seeds. One Imagineer <\/em>even collected some bokkie <\/em>dung along the way, opening the discussion of seed dispersal!<\/p>\n

Iimbovane then showed the learners different seeds and seed pods, from the large Baobab tree (Adansonia <\/em>sp.) to the winged seed of the Bushwillow (Combretum<\/em> sp.). The Imagineers<\/em> was fascinated by the different shapes and sizes and learned about the main parts of a seed \u0336\u00a0\u00a0 the seed coat, embryo and food store.<\/p>\n

The Imagineers<\/em> were further entertained with facts about seeds, how they travel, and the importance of seeds in maintaining healthy ecosystems. After learning how seeds travel, each Imagineer<\/em> received a handful of seeds to categorise based on how they spread.<\/p>\n

After feedback from a few Imagineer<\/em>s on how the grouped their seeds, the This was followed by short discussion about seed banks and a short video clip on the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.<\/p>\n

The day ended with a practical activity during which each Imagineer<\/em> had to build his or her own bird feeder with a mix of birdseed, peanut butter, rope, sticks and empty toilet rolls.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, the Iimbovane team were congratulated by the moms who joined the day\u2019s activities. They found the workshop very educational and were fascinated by everything they had learned about seeds.<\/p>\n
