The December holiday is almost here and especially this year, we’re all looking forward to escaping for a week or two. But before you leave, there are a few things you can do now to ensure that your return is seamless. Here are a few tips: 

  1. Activate your Out of Office function on your sun.ac.za Outlook mailbox and indicate in the message when you will be available again in case someone needs to contact you. Also, indicate who will be responsible during your time away and add their email address to your Out of Office.
  2. Make sure that your relevant work-related data is accessible for usage by your colleagues while you are away. However, do NOT give your password to colleagues when as this poses a security risk.
  3. If your sun password might expire during your holiday, rather change it before you go. If it expires while you are away you will be locked out of your account and it will cause unnecessary stress to deactivate it in January. 
  4. If you receive a phishing email on your sun account over the holiday and clicked on links or typed in your username and password, your account may be compromised. Immediately change your password at www.sun.ac.za/password and log a service request on the ICT Partner Portal. Your device will then be checked and scanned after the holiday. Remember that you can also report spam directly to Microsoft by using the handy Report Message function in Outlook.
  5. Information Technology will also be closing, like the rest of the University, on 24 December and opening again on 3 January. If possible, please log your IT requests as soon as possible before you leave. If you have a critical problem, it might be difficult to assist you a day before you leave or on the last Friday since suppliers also close over the festive season.

Die Desembervakansie is om die draai en na die afgelope jaar het ons almal `n week of twee weg nodig. Maar voordat jy gaan is daar `n paar takies wat jy nou al kan afhandel sodat jou terugkoms in Januarie pynloos is. Hier is `n paar wenke:

    1. Aktiveer die Out of Office-funksie op jou sun.ac.za Outlook-posbus en dui aan wanneer jy weer beskikbaar sal wees indien iemand jou moet kontak. Dui ook aan wie die verantwoordelike persoon sal wees gedurende die tydperk wat jy weg is en sit die persoon se e-posadres by op die Out of Office-boodskap.
    2. Maak seker dat enige werkverwante data toeganklik is vir jou kollegas terwyl jy weg is. Moet egter onder geen omstandighede jou wagwoord vir kollegas gee nie aangesien dit `n sekuriteitsrisiko skep.
    3. Indien jou sun-wagwoord moontlik kan verval gedurende die vakansie, verander dit eerder voordat jy weggaan. As dit verval terwyl jy weg is, kan jy uit jou rekening gesluit word en dit onnodige stres veroorsaak wanneer jy dit moet heraktiveer in Januarie. 
    4. Indien jy gedurende die vakansie ’n phishing e-pos ontvang en op skakels gekliek het of jou gebruikersnaam en wagwoord erens suspisieus ingevul het, verander asb. dadelik jou wagwoord by www.sun.ac.za/password. Teken ook ’n versoek aan op die ICT Partner Portal sodat jou toestel nagegaan word na die vakansie. Onthou dat jy ook self spam kan aanmeld met Microsoft se Report message funksionaliteit in Outlook.
    5. Informasietegnologie sluit, soos die res van die Universiteit op 24 Desember en maak weer 3 Januarie oop. Indien moontlik, probeer jou versoeke so vroeg as moontlik aanmeld voor jy weggaan.  Indien jy `n kritiese probleem het, kan ons jou moontlik nie `n dag voor die tyd of op die laaste Vrydag help nie aangesien verskaffers ook sluit gedurende die feesseisoen.

The Cyberbullying Campaign, a partnership between the Equality Unit and Division Student Affairs, kicks off with the webinar, Cyberbullying and the Law, with lawyer and national social media law expert, Emma Sadleir. You are invited to join Emma, who will be presenting on various topics including anonymous social media accounts, doxing, legal recourse, and what constitutes cyberbullying.

If you have been waiting for a computer or other hardware you have ordered, you would have noticed that delivery is taking much longer than usual. This is undoubtedly a big inconvenience and cause much frustration.  

The reason for these delays is a worldwide supply shortage of semiconductors effecting 169 industries, ranging from car manufacturing, steel production, consumer electronics and even soap manufacturing just to name a few.

What caused these shortages? Apart from Covid-19 pandemic causing an increase on the number of people working remotely and requiring equipment, a number of other factors also played a role such as the tech war between the U.S. and China.

It is also not expected that the chip industry will be back to its healthy supply-demand situation until 2023.

The two companies that the university appointed as suppliers for laptops and desktops, Dell and Lenovo also notified us of the severe component shortages, and they are doing their best to shorten delivery periods under these severe circumstances.  The shortages include LCD screens, CPUs, audio cards and network cards resulting in extended lead times.

Indien jy verlede jaar `n skootrekenaar of ander apparatuur bestel het, sou jy waarskynlik agtergekom het dat aflewering langer as gewoonlik neem. Dis ongetwyfeld `n groot ongerief en veroorsaak geweldige frustrasie.

Die rede vir hierdie vertragings is `n wêreldwye tekort aan halfgeleiers wat 169 industrieë beïnvloed, onder andere motorvervaardigers, staalproduksie, verbruikerelektronika tot selfs seepvervaardigers.

Wat het hierdie tekort veroorsaak? Buiten dat die COVID19-pandemie veroorsaak het dat die hoeveelheid mense wat tuis werk en skielik toerusting benodig het aansienlik vermeerder het, het `n aantal ander faktore, soos die tech-oorlog tussen Amerika en China, ook `n rol gespeel.

Die verwagting is dat die mikroskyfie-industrie nie voor 2023 sal terugkeer na die normale verskaf- en aanvraagsituasie nie.

Dell en Lenovo, die twee maatskappye wat deur die Universiteit aangestel as verskaffers vir skootrekenaars en tafelrekenaars, het ons ook in kennis gestel van die ernstige komponenttekorte en dat hulle hulle bes probeer om die afleweringsperiodes onder omstandighede te verkort. Die tekorte sluit LCD-skerms, CPU’s, klankkaarte en netwerkkaarte in, wat kan lei tot vertraagde leweringstye.

Ons waardeer jou geduld. Ongelukkig bevind ons onsself in ongewone omstandighede buite ons beheer, maar wees verseker dat ons ons bes probeer om seker te maak dat julle bestellings so gou as moontlik afgehandel word.
