Many of our staff and students use FortiClient to obtain VPN access to the Stellenbosch University network when they are not on campus. To maintain a safe and secure network, we have to put measures in place for our services to minimise the potential exposure to the University from damages which may result from unauthorised use of university resources.  This is particularly important when it comes to access via VPN to our network.  

From 6 August 2018 new VPN users have to register for VPN usage. If you have used VPN (FortiClient) since 1 January 2018, you are considered a registered user by default and don’t have to reapply for access. However, if you are a new VPN user, please follow the process described below.

If you need VPN access to the SU network via FortiClient, the following simple process is applicable: 

  1. The head of your department needs to send an email to help@sun.ac.za motivating why you require VPN access for work purposes.
  2. You will receive an email confirming your registration with instructions on how to install the FortiClient needed for VPN usage. 

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a way of connecting your off-site computer directly to the University network and allows you to access internal resources such as other computers, network storage, websites, journals using the applications already installed on your off-site computer. VPN provides an encrypted connection which helps to ensure that sensitive data is safely transmitted and prevents unauthorized people from eavesdropping on the traffic, allowing the user to conduct work remotely.

A secure VPN connection to the SU network with FortiClient is not necessary for standard, web-based services. These include email, library resources, SUNLearn or the SUN-e-HR website. All of these services are already accessible via the internet without a VPN connection.

ʼn Groot groep van ons personeel en studente gebruik FortiClient om VPN-toegang te verkry tot die Universiteitsnetwerk wanneer hulle nie op kampus is nie. Om te verseker dat ons netwerk veilig en sekuur bly, moet ons sekere maatreëls vir ons dienste in plek sit om die Universiteit te beskerm teen skade weens die onwettige gebruik van universiteitsbronne. Dis veral belangrik wanneer dit kom by toegang tot ons netwerk met VPN.

Vanaf 6 Augustus 2018 word daar vereis dat alle nuwe VPN-gebruikers registreer vir die diens. Indien jy sedert 1 Januarie 2018 VPN (FortiClient) gebruik, is jy outomaties reeds geregistreer en hoef jy nie weer aansoek te doen nie.  As jy egter ʼn nuwe VPN-gebruiker is, volg asseblief die onderstaande instruksies:

  1. Die hoof van jou departement moet ʼn e-pos stuur na help@sun.ac.za wat motiveer hoekom jy VPN-toegang benodig vir werksdoeleindes.
  2. Nadat die versoek ontvang is sal jy ʼn e-pos ontvang wat jou registrasie vir VPN bevestig, tesame met instruksies vir die installasie van FortiClient, die sagteware benodig vir VPN-toegang. 

ʼn VPN (Virtual Private Network) is ʼn metode om direk op die Universiteit se netwerk aan te teken met jou eie rekenaar wanneer jy nie op kampus is nie. Op dié manier kry jy, met behulp van toepassings wat reeds op jou rekenaar geinstalleer is, toegang tot interne US-bronne soos ander rekenaars, netwerkstoorspasie, webwerwe en joernale. VPN bied ʼn enkripteerde verbinding wat help verseker dat sensitiewe data veilig versend word, voorkom dat ongemagtigde persone afluister op die verbinding en jy sodoende veilig elders kan werk.

ʼn Sekure VPN-verbinding aan die US-netwerk d.m.v. FortiClient is nie nodig vir standaard, webgebaseerde dienste nie. Dit sluit e-pos, biblioteekbronne,SUNLearn en die SUN-e-HR webwerf in. Al hierdie dienste is reeds toeganklik via die internet sonder `n VPN-verbinding.

Did you know that your university PC always stays up to date with the latest software and you don’t have to lift a finger? 

One of the main reasons for this is that PCs without the latest software, in particular, Microsoft software, pose a high-security threat if they are connected to the SUN network without being adequately protected. Therefore, it’s extremely important that all network users’ devices are up to date at all times. The same goes for antivirus software. Recently this policy also protected SU staff against the WannaCry ransomware when it wreaked havoc around the rest of the world.

The updates are set up so that Microsoft updates will be done when you connect your device to the SUN network. Updates via the SUN network are free when you are on campus, but it could happen that updates are available for download when you are off-campus.

If you use VPN* at home to connect to the SUN network from off campus, be aware that updates may load in the background. Since they are usually quite large, this could cause unusually high traffic and/or large expenses. Microsoft updates are usually released monthly on the every second Tuesday of the month. If you have limited or use expensive data at home, keep an eye on your data usage during that week. 

*VPN (Virtual Private Network) is  a connection to the SUN-network which gives a user the same access as when he/she is on campus.  Take note that most SUN services, for example email, Sun-e-HR, my.sun.ac.za, the Useradm administration page, etc, are all directly available from the internet without a VPN connection.

Het jy geweet dat jou universiteitsrekenaar outomaties op datum bly met sagteware-opdaterings, sonder dat jy enigiets hoef te doen?

Een van die hoofredes hiervoor is dat rekenaars wat nie die nuutste sagteware, spesifiek Microsoft-sagteware installeer het nie, `n hoë sekuriteitsrisiko is indien dit aan die SUN-netwerk verbind sonder die nodige beskerming. Gevolglik is dit belangrik dat alle netwerkgebruikers se toestelle altyd op datum is. Dieselfde geld vir anti-virus sagteware. Dis juis hierdie beleid wat ons US-personeel onlangs beskerm het teen die WannaCry ransomware.

As gevolg van die beleid word Microsoft opdaterings ook gedoen sodra jou toestel aan die SUN-netwerk verbind. Opdaterings op die SUN-netwerk wanneer jy op kampus is, is gratis, maar dit kan gebeur dat opdaterings beskikbaar is en wil aflaai as jou rekenaar nie by die kantoor aan die netwerk verbind is nie.

Indien jy d.m.v. VPN* aan die SUN-netwerk verbind wanneer jy af van kampus werk, wees bewus daarvan dat opdaterings in die agtergrond kan laai. Aangesien dit in baie gevalle groot is, kan dit ongewone hoë verkeer en/of ook hoë kostes genereer. Microsoft-opdaterings word normaalweg maandeliks op die tweede Dinsdag van die maand vrygestel. Indien jy dus beperkte of duur data gebruik, hou veral gedurende daardie week jou dataverbruik dop.

*VPN (Virtual Private Network) is `n verbinding van elders na die SUN-netwerk wat die gebruiker dieselfde toegang gee as wanneer hy/sy op kampus is. Let op dat meeste algemene SUN dienste (bv. e-pos, Sun-e-HR, my.sun.ac.za, Useradm-administrasieblad, ens.) direk vanaf die internet beskikbaar is sonder `n VPN verbinding.

With the implementation of the new firewall”, the method for connecting to the internet at home, has also changed. If you’re one of the lucky ones who can work from home, you can follow the instructions below and in no time your internet will be up and running again.

For step by step instructions for the installation of the new VPN client, click here. If you are currently using the Checkpoint VPN (you’ll see a yellow key in the corner of your pc’s screen) first follow these instructions before installing the client. Just remember, this installation will not work if it’s done from campus. You need to be outside the university’s network.

If you use NXInetkey without VPN from home, it will be deactivated from 1 April due to security reasons. Follow the same installation procedures as the VPN users and install the new client.

Met die uitrol van die nuwe vuurmuur (“firewall”) het die metode vir toegang tot die internet vir tuisgebruikers ook verander. As jy een van die gelukkiges is wat by die huis ook kan werk, kan jy onderstaande instruksies volg en sal jy in `n oogwink weer aan die gang wees.

Vir stap-vir-stap-instruksies vir die installasie van die nuwe VPN-kliënt, kliek hier. Indien jy tans reeds die “checkpoint VPN” gebruik (jy sal `n sleuteltjie onder regs op jou rekenaarskerm sien), volg eers hierdie instruksies voordat jy die kliënt installeer. Let wel, die installasie werk NIE op kampus nie. Jy moet buite die US-netwerk wees.

Indien jy NXInetkey sonder VPN vanaf die huis gebruik, sal dit vanaf 1 April weens sekuriteitsredes nie meer werk nie. Volg dieselfde prosedures as VPN-gebruikers en installeer die nuwe program.
