{"id":11840,"date":"2017-02-28T19:12:34","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T17:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/?p=11840"},"modified":"2017-04-18T09:34:42","modified_gmt":"2017-04-18T07:34:42","slug":"junk-e-mail-folder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/2017\/02\/junk-e-mail-folder\/","title":{"rendered":"[:en]What is the junk e-mail folder?[:af]Wat is die Junk e-mail folder?[:]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[:en]<\/p>\n<p>Just before the weekend, we became aware of a particularly intrusive and persistent phishing attack. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/en\/2017\/02\/warning-about-standard-bank-phishing-scam-being-sent-from-university-e-mail-address\/\">An e-mail, seemingly from Standard Bank<\/a>, was distributed from a staff member&#8217;s e-mail account after being hacked.<\/p>\n<p>In order to prevent the attack from causing more damage to other e-mail users, stricter spam filter measures had to be implemented over the weekend. After this time period, the filter was reset to its default.<\/p>\n<p>These measures caused some e-mails that weren&#8217;t spam, to divert to Outlook&#8217;s Junk Mail folder. They were not deleted, but they weren&#8217;t visible in inboxes.<\/p>\n<p>Even though it is advisable that you occasionally check your Junk mail folder, it seems some staff aren&#8217;t familiar with the folder or it&#8217;s function.<\/p>\n<p>The Microsoft Outlook Junk E-mail Filter helps reduce unwanted email messages in your <b class=\"ocpUI\">Inbox<\/b>. Junk e-mail, also known as spam, is moved by the filter away to the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Junk E-mail <\/b><strong>folder.<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/2017\/02\/junk-e-mail-folder\/spam-mail\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11846\"><br \/>\n <\/a><strong><br \/>\n <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/files\/2017\/02\/spam-mail-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/>How the Junk E-mail filter works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Junk E-mail Filter evaluates each incoming message to assess whether it might be spam, based on several factors. These can include the time when the message was sent and the content of the message. By default, the Junk E-mail Filter is turned on and the protection level is set to <b class=\"ocpUI\">Low<\/b>. This level catches only the most obvious spam. You can make the filter more aggressive by <a class=\"ocpArticleLink\" href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/changing-the-level-of-protection-e89c12d8-9d61-4320-8c57-d982c8d52f6b\">changing the level of protection<\/a> that it provides.<\/p>\n<p>You can adjust the Junk E-mail Filter settings in the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Junk E-mail Options<\/b> dialogue box.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<p>On the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Home<\/b> tab, in the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Delete<\/b> group, click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Junk<\/b>, and then click <b class=\"ocpUI\">Junk E-mail Options<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Any message that is suspected to be junk is moved to the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Junk E-mail<\/b> folder. We recommend that you periodically review the messages in the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Junk E-mail<\/b> folder to check for legitimate messages that were incorrectly classified as junk. If you find a message that isn\u2019t junk, drag them back to the <b class=\"ocpUI\">Inbox<\/b> or to any folder.
