{"id":12986,"date":"2018-06-04T09:31:33","date_gmt":"2018-06-04T07:31:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/?p=12986"},"modified":"2018-07-31T12:32:43","modified_gmt":"2018-07-31T10:32:43","slug":"tripadvisor-phishing-scam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/2018\/06\/tripadvisor-phishing-scam\/","title":{"rendered":"[:en]Tripadvisor phishing scam[:]"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[:en]<\/p>\n<p>It seems that there are a number of you who make some use of TripAdvisor.com for planning your overseas trips.\u00a0TripAdvisor is travel and restaurant website that provides hotel and restaurant reviews, accommodation bookings etc. but the phishing scammers are currently targeting South African and Australian users with a phishing scam to try to get access to their TripAdvisor account.<\/p>\n<p>Be on the lookout for a phishing scam that *might* target university personnel and student accounts over the next few days:<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/files\/2018\/06\/tripadvisor.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"274\" height=\"184\" align=\"right\" \/>Hi &lt;your name&gt;,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Want to keep your username?<\/em><em><br \/>\nSince you haven&#8217;t been on TripAdvisor in a while, your username\u00a0&lt;your TripAdvisor username&gt;\u00a0will expire in two weeks. Want to keep it? Simply click on the button below:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Keep my username<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While this might not seem to be much of an issue for some people, the real danger is that, in many cases, university personnel and students &#8211; some making use of TripAdvisor, \u00a0use\u00a0the same\u00a0password for all their Internet accounts. According to a recent Ofcom report, over 55% of\u00a0Internet users older than 16\u00a0used the same password for most \u2013 if not all! \u2013 the websites they tended to use.<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0you do use the same password for lots of\u00a0sites, and one of those sites are hacked, (like Tripadvisor)\u00a0and hackers could\u00a0start using your \u201cleaked password\u201d on multiple sites, they could gain access to more areas of your life such as your email, banking, social media and other accounts.<\/p>\n<p>A very useful site to check if any of your online account have been hacked is <a href=\"https:\/\/haveibeenpwned.com\/\">https:\/\/haveibeenpwned.com\/<\/a>\u00a0This site helps you to check if you have an account that has been compromised in a data breach.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I concede that remembering passwords can be a real challenge, especially if you have a lot of online accounts. I\u00a0recommend using password management software \u2013 also sometimes known as a password vault \u2013 like 1Password, KeePass and Lastpass.<\/p>\n<p>Password management software can remember all your hard-to-crack passwords for you <em>(they can even generate them to make sure they\u2019re super complex)<\/em>, and store them securely behind one master password.<\/p>\n<p>Please be very careful out there.
