\"\"<\/a>After 10 years support Windows 7 came to an end on 14 January 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n

How does this affect you?\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If you still use Windows 7, after January 14 your PC will no longer receive security updates or technical support from Microsoft. Subsequently your PC will pose a threat to the university\u2019s network and we might have to remove it from the network in future for security reasons. This also means that you data will be unprotected, and you could potentially have no access to the network (in other words, no internet, email, etc.)<\/p>\n

Therefore, if your PC is still running on Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 you will have to upgrade to Windows 10, an operating system which can provide the latest security updates to keep your data safe.<\/strong>\u00a0\u202fYou can read more on\u202f<\/span>Microsoft’s software life cycle on their site.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Upgrades from Windows 7 & 8.1 to Windows 10 will be free for staff. To request this upgrade, please log a request on the\u00a0\u202f<\/span>ICT Partner Portal<\/span><\/a>\u202f<\/span>(Windows 7 to Windows 10 upgrade)<\/span> after which you will automatically receive and <\/span>email<\/span>. Please include the following information in the request:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. the computer\u2019s asset number<\/li>\n
  2. device type<\/li>\n
  3. contact numbers<\/li>\n
  4. building name<\/li>\n
  5. room number<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Your device will be checke<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0for an upgrade possibility as\u00a0<\/span>o<\/span>lder equipment may need components for the\u00a0<\/span>upgrade,<\/span>\u00a0and this will be for the account of the department.\u202f<\/span>There might also be a possibility that very old equipment\u00a0<\/span><\/b>or devices that do not meet the minimum requirements\u00a0<\/span><\/b>will not be able to be upgraded<\/span><\/b>.\u202f<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    If any other actions are needed, an IT technician will also contact you.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    IT will do the following without charge:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Guide<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>you with<\/span>\u00a0w<\/span>ork related data\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>be backed up to OneDrive<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Upgrade the operating system from Windows 7 & 8.1 to Windows 10<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. After the upgrade a technician <\/span>can assist with if needed:\u00a0<\/span>Install<\/span>ing of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>non-standard<\/span> c<\/span>ampus\u00a0<\/span>related<\/span>\u00a0software such as SPSS,\u00a0<\/span>Statistica<\/span>, etc.<\/span>,<\/span> i<\/span>nstall<\/span> printers.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      You will have to pay for:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Backups of all data<\/span>\u00a0if and\u00a0<\/span>IT\u00a0technician\u00a0has to\u00a0do the backup<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Hardware components necessary for the upgrade to Windows 10<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        If IT is requested to backup data, the cost will be as follow:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

        Less than\u202f15GB \u2013\u00a0<\/span>R1310-<\/span>00<\/span>\u00a0
        \nMore than 15GB \u2013\u00a0<\/span>R2240-00<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
