{"id":4683,"date":"2013-10-04T11:00:52","date_gmt":"2013-10-04T09:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/?p=4683"},"modified":"2013-10-21T15:44:32","modified_gmt":"2013-10-21T13:44:32","slug":"on-the-roll-with-windows-7","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/2013\/10\/on-the-roll-with-windows-7\/","title":{"rendered":"<!--:en-->On the roll with Windows 7<!--:--><!--:af-->Windows 7 stoomroller voort<!--:-->"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:en--><\/p>\n<p>Some of you might\u00a0have received a mail with the subject <b>\u201cWindows 7 Service Pack 1 &#8211; Weekend rollout\u201d<\/b> from <b>\u201cIT \u2013 Algemene Navrae \u2013 General Enquiries\u201d.<\/b><\/p>\n<p>This is\u00a0not\u00a0a scam or a hoax!\u00a0<i><br \/><\/i><\/p>\n<p>This mail was sent out by ITUS to a specific targeted group &#8211; all people with\u00a0<b>Windows 7<\/b>\u00a0on their PCs that\u00a0do not\u00a0have\u00a0<b>Service Pack 1<\/b>\u00a0installed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you did\u00a0<b>NOT<\/b>\u00a0receive the mail then your PC is already up to the correct patch level and no further action is required from you.\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>If you\u00a0<b>DID<\/b>\u00a0receive the mail then it is important that you follow the instructions in the mail mentioned above carefully, in other words, do NOT switch off your computer when you leave for home on Friday afternoon.\u00a0<i>You do not have to be logged in to the machine, it just has to be switched on and displaying\u00a0<b>the \u201cCtrl + Alt + Delete to log on\u201d<\/b>\u00a0message.<\/i>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\">[ARTICLE BY DAVID WILES]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>EXAMPLE OF THE NOTIFICATION E-MAIL<\/strong><\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">ITUS \u2013 Stellenbosch University \u2013 critical update<\/p>\n<p align=\"right\">August &#8211; October 2013<\/p>\n<p>The When:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Weekend of &#8230;&#8230;.\u00a0\u00a02013.<br \/>If your workstation is a desktop\u00a0PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU DO NOT SWITCH IT OFF TOMORROW.\u00a0<br \/>You may lock it or log off, but please\u00a0do not switch the PC off\u00a0this weekend (tomorrow) &#8211; once you leave the office at the end of the day.<br \/>Please make sure to save and close your work (e.g. open word documents, etc.) before you leave.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Who:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ITUS has found that your version of Windows 7 requires a critical update: \u201cService Pack 1\u201d.<br \/><b>Please read this email thoroughly!<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The What:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>As your computer forms part of our SUN network and is an asset of the University of Stellenbosch, it is crucial to keep your computer updated and secure.<\/i>\u00a0 ITUS will be engaging in a campus wide rollout of this \u201cWindows 7 Service Pack 1\u201d to all computers that require it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The How:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ITUS will be utilising an automated process to update your Windows 7.\u00a0<b>The automated process will target a few computers at a time starting tomorrow evening at 19h00 and will be completed before Sunday at 19h00.<\/b><\/li>\n<li>If you find yourself working on the office computer this weekend, this is what you could expect :<br \/>This process will download and execute the installation of the update, automatically. These actions will execute in the background as not to interfere with your working experience.\u00a0 However, at completion of the said installation, a computer \u201cRestart\u201d is necessary. This will also be an automatic action.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ol>\n<li><b>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/b><b>You will be notified via a pop-up, after which the computer will restart.<\/b>\u00a0This is pop-up will act as a countdown, to allow you to save any work if needed.\u00a0<b>This allows you 2 minutes to save your work or to send that last email!\u00a0<\/b><b>J<\/b><\/li>\n<li>Please note the restart is mandatory and cannot be undone.<\/li>\n<li>After the restart, the final stage of the installation will commence. This might include, but is not limited to, flickering of the screen, rebooting once, displaying the progress of the installation. This part of the process might take upwards of 10 minutes to complete.<\/li>\n<li><b>PLEASE NOTE<\/b>: You will not be able to work on the computer at this stage; ideal time for a coffee\/tea break! Please do not at any time manually switch off or restart your computer.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Once the computer displays the Welcome screen, the installation is done and you may continue to log in etc.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p align=\"center\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p align=\"center\">**********************************************************<\/p>\n<p>The automated process is one that ITUS will be using more frequently as there is much less interruption to workflow. Ons is wel vanaf Augustus tot Oktober besig om rekenaars met Windows 7 op te gradeer met `n kritiese\u00a0<em>Service Pack.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Die e-pos dien slegs as kennisgewing en al wat van jou verwag word, is slegs om nie jou rekenaar af te skakel op die datums wat verskaf word in die e-pos nie.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Indien jy nie `n e-pos ontvang het nie, beteken dit dat jou rekenaar op datum is met die nuutste program-opdaterings en geen verdere aksie word van jou verlang nie.
