{"id":5815,"date":"2014-05-23T09:00:24","date_gmt":"2014-05-23T07:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/?p=5815"},"modified":"2016-01-18T14:57:46","modified_gmt":"2016-01-18T12:57:46","slug":"let-nao-manage-your-postgraduate-students-information-for-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/2014\/05\/let-nao-manage-your-postgraduate-students-information-for-you\/","title":{"rendered":"<!--:en-->Easily manage your postgraduate students\u2019 information<!--:--><!--:af-->Bestuur jou nagraadse studente inligting sonder moeite<!--:-->"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:en--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Managing postgraduate students is a lot of work, but NAO can help you.\u00a0 Have you ever wished that information about postgraduate students of your Faculty or Department was more readily available?\u00a0 If you have never used NAO before, now is the time to to find out more and save yourself a lot of trouble in future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The following remarks have been made about the system and you can decide for yourself whether they sound promising or not:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why haven\u2019t I heard about the system before \u2026 grrrr.&#8221;<br \/> &#8220;NAO is the best thing that has happened in my career during the past few years!&#8221;<br \/> &#8220;Wow! Now I never have to hunt for a student number again \u2026<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0&#8220;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>NAO is the abbreviation for Nagraadse Akademiese Ondersteuning\/Postgraduate Academic Support; a web-based system designed specifically for staff members involved with the management of postgraduate students.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, you can get rid of the spreadsheets you have used year after year to keep track of important information, because everything you need is \u00a0available via NAO, fresh from the central system every single morning.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/files\/2014\/05\/1380083_highlighter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/>Below is a list of various types of information available to make your life a bit easier:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Undergraduate final year students (for recruitment purposes)<\/li>\n<li>Applicants from elsewhere \u2013 see how far the applications have progressed<\/li>\n<li>Registered postgraduate students<\/li>\n<li>Postgraduate students not registered yet<\/li>\n<li>Lists of graduates form previous years<\/li>\n<li>Historic information as far back as 2000<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Excel reports are available with as little effort as a mouse click, to enable you to do further data crunching,\u00a0 filter options will narrow down your searches to only the records you are interested in and data on the screen can be sorted by clicking column headings.<\/p>\n<p>At a glance and without lifting a finger the system shows whether a student<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>is from abroad as well as his\/her nationality,<\/li>\n<li>is currently being funded or has received funding in the past,<\/li>\n<li>already has a study leader and \/ or thesis title captured to the central system,<\/li>\n<li>has passed away and<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">information such as SU number, nickname, surname, programme, anchor module, email address, telephone number and much more is also immediately available.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Something extra about the system worth mentioning, is that e-mails can be sent to groups of students.\u00a0 Just create your own wording in both English and Afrikaans and e-mails will be sent to students in the correspondence language which they have chosen at registration. The same wording can be used year after year, for example to remind slowcoaches to register before a certain date to avoid paying a fine!<\/p>\n<p>You will be able to create your own notes per student (e.g. John was out of action for a certain time as a result of influenza), get access to full study records, check funding to make sure departmental bursaries were awarded and get hold of lots more information.<\/p>\n<p>The best news of all is that Study Leaders and Thesis Titles can be captured to the central system via NAO, which will spare you a lot of worrying about your hard drive crashing and destroying all your hard work of the past 6 months!<\/p>\n<p>If you need more information, click <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun.ac.za\/english\/Documents\/Postgraduate%20Academic%20Support\/PGIO_3_NAO_ENG_20140129.ppt?Web=1\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a> to see a Powerpoint presentation. <span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Send email to Rita de Jager, Head: Postgraduate Academic Support\u00a0at <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"mailto:rd@sun.ac.za\">rd@sun.ac.za<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> to be given access, scheduled for a training session or to ask further questions about NAO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>[Article by Rita de Jager with much appreciated input from prof Keith Palmer, Dept of E &amp; E Engineering]<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--:--><!--:af--><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\"><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Die bestuur van nagraadse studente is baie werk, maar NAO kan jou help. \u00a0Het jy al ooit gewens dat jy op \u2018n maklike manier inligting van jou Fakulteit of Departement se nagraadse studente in die hande kan kry?\u00a0 As jy nog nie met NAO kennis gemaak het nie, is dit dalk nou die tyd om meer uit te vind en jouself in die toekoms baie moeite te spaar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Die volgende opmerkings is al oor die stelsel gemaak en oordeel maar self of dit nie belowend klink nie:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Hoekom hoor ek nou eers van die stelsel\u2026 grrrr .&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;NAO is die beste ding wat die afgelope paar jaar in my loopbaan gebeur het!&#8221;<br \/>&#8220;Nou hoef ek nooit weer \u2018n us-nommer van \u2018n student te soek nie \u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>NAO is die afkorting vir Nagraadse Akademiese Ondersteuning; \u2018n webstelsel wat spesiaal vir personeel ontwerp is om hulle lewe makliker te maak wat die bestuur van nagraadse studente betref.<\/p>\n<p>Eerlikwaar, jy kan maar ontslae raak van jou eie sigblaaie waarmee jy jaar vir jaar probeer tred hou het van belangrike inligting, want jy kry elke oggend alles wat jy nodig het, vars uit die sentrale stelsel via NAO.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/files\/2014\/05\/1380083_highlighter.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" align=\"right\" \/>Hieronder is \u2018n lys van verskillende tipes inligting beskikbaar om jou lewe \u2018n bietjie makliker te maak:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Voorgraadse finalejaars (vir werwing )<\/li>\n<li>Aansoekers van elders \u2013 stel vas hoe ver die aansoek gevorder het<\/li>\n<li>Geregistreerde nagraadse studente<\/li>\n<li>Nagraadse studente nog nie geregistreer<\/li>\n<li>Graduandi lyste van vorige jare<\/li>\n<li>Historiese inligting tot sover terug as 2000<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Excel verslae is beskikbaar met \u2018n muisklik sodat jy verdere verwerking van die data kan doen, filteropsies kan gebruik word om groepe studente te verklein en data kan gesorteer word deur op verskillende kolomhofies te klik.<\/p>\n<p>Met \u2018n oogopslag en sonder om \u2018n vinger te verroer wys die stelsel vir jou of \u2018n student<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>afkomstig is uit die buiteland sowel as sy\/haar nasionaliteit,<\/li>\n<li>befonds word of in die verlede befondsing ontvang het,<\/li>\n<li>reeds studieleiers het en of die tesis-titel al vasgel\u00ea is,<\/li>\n<li>oorlede is\u00a0<span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">en<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\"> inligting soos US-nommer, noemnaam, van, program, ankermodule, e-pos adres, telefoonnommer en nog baie meer, is onmiddellik beskikbaar.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2018n Ekstra lekkerte van die stelsel is dat jy e-pos aan groepe studente kan stuur.
