{"id":8990,"date":"2015-11-20T08:00:48","date_gmt":"2015-11-20T06:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/?p=8990"},"modified":"2015-11-20T09:42:41","modified_gmt":"2015-11-20T07:42:41","slug":"the-internet-of-things","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/2015\/11\/the-internet-of-things\/","title":{"rendered":"<!--:en-->The Internet of Things<!--:--><!--:af-->Die &#8220;Internet of Things&#8221;<!--:-->"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--:en--><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The internet of things&#8221; \u2014\u00a0a rather unimaginative way to describe something vast. \u00a0What did <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sustainable-business\/2015\/feb\/27\/the-internet-of-things-what-the-man-who-coined-the-phrase-has-to-say\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin Ashton<\/a> mean when he used the phrase for the first time in 1995?<\/p>\n<div class=\"mod\" data-md=\"61\">\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\n<p class=\"main-article-subtitle\"><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"main-article-subtitle\"><em>The Internet of Things<\/em> (IoT) refers to connected devices communicating with each another and using machine-to-machine (M2M) communication via virtual, mobile or instantaneous connections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"main-article-subtitle\">This network of physical objects is embedded with electronics, software, sensors, and network connectivity, enabling the objects to collect and exchange data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"main-article-subtitle\">They can include any object fitted with the right technology and the ability to connect to the internet. For example, home appliances, most forms of transport, shops\u00a0and\u00a0machines used for manufacturing, farming, healthcare, etc. Existing M2M applications include smart metering, patient monitoring, CCTV surveillance, vehicle tracking, secure ATMs and digital signage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/it\/files\/2015\/11\/network-782707_640-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"network-782707_640\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" align=\"right\" \/>What can it be used for?<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">The main advantages of <em>The Internet of Things<\/em> is increased productivity, efficiency and better organisation of tools, machines and people.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">One area where IoT can be most beneficial, is healthcare. Diseases can be monitored and analysed\u00a0to create new treatments and also prevented in the long run.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">In farming, sensors are connected to crops and cattle to increase production and track herds.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">In the home environment security systems and household appliances can be monitored and controlled. In future your fridge will be able to let you know when you are out of milk and possibly even order it online for you. You will be able to activate your coffee machine from your cell phone to have a cup of hot coffee waiting when you get home.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">LG recently introduced <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lghomechat.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\">LG Homechat<\/a> which enables you to SMS\u00a0any of your LG home appliances. And yes, they answer back. Unfortunately this functionality isn&#8217;t available in South Africa yet, but it&#8217;s out there and being used.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">These are simple examples, but the possibilities are vast. For more ideas, have at this interactive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media-network\/ng-interactive\/2015\/jun\/17\/the-internet-of-nearly-everything\" target=\"_blank\">web application<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\"><strong>Is it safe?<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">IoT has many advantages, but the biggest concern, especially in its early stages, is security and privacy. To function optimally these devices\u00a0need your personal data and since everything will be connected, in the cloud or on companies&#8217; databases, it will also be available for if proper security is not in place.<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"_oDd\" data-hveid=\"41\">Healthcare is most at risk if data is tampered with or leaked. Deleting sensitive medical information, such blood group info, could have fatal repercussions.
