Dr Gretchen Jansen is a lecturer in the Department of Mercantile Law at Stellenbosch University. She is also a member of the Anton Mostert Chair of Intellectual Property. Dr Jansen completed her LLB and LLM(Intellectual Property Law)(cum laude) degrees at Stellenbosch University in 2017 and 2018 respectively. Her doctoral dissertation is titled “A critical examination of performers’ rights to remuneration as an effective protective mechanism for commercial musicians in South Africa”, completed under the supervision of Prof Sadulla Karjiker in 2025.
Dr Jansen lectures on intellectual property law in the digital environment, business organisations law, and the law and technology. Her research interests include intellectual property law in the digital environment, art law, and performers’ protection. She was a visiting research fellow at the Information, Telecommunications and Media Law Institute of the University of Münster. As part of this visit, she coordinated collaborations between the Münster Art Law Clinic and Stellenbosch Art Law Society. She is also the co-editor of “Art and Law – A Comprehensive Guide on Art Law in South Africa” published in 2023. Her peer-reviewed publications deal with topics such as copyright in the music industry and the development of intellectual property law in the digital environment.

Dr Gretchen Jansen is ‘n dosent in die Departement Handelsreg aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch. Sy is ook ‘n lid van die Anton Mostert Leerstoel van Intellektuele Goedereg. Dr Jansen het haar LLB- en LLM (Intellektuele Goedereg)(cum laude)-grade aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch onderskeidelik in 2017 en 2018 voltooi. Haar doktorale proefskrif, getiteld “A critical examination of performers’ rights to remuneration as an effective protective mechanism for commercial musicians in South Africa”, het sy in 2025 onder die leiding van Prof Sadulla Karjiker voltooi.
Dr Jansen doseer oor intellektuele goedereg in die digitale omgewing, sake-organisasie-reg, en die reg en tegnologie. Haar navorsingsbelangstellings sluit in intellektuele goedereg in die digitale omgewing, kunsreg en kunstenaarsbeskerming. Sy was ‘n besoekende navorsingsgenoot by die Inligting-, Telekommunikasie- en Mediaregsinstituut van die Universiteit van Münster. As deel van hierdie besoek het sy samewerking tussen die Münster Art Law Clinic en Stellenbosch Art Law Society gekoördineer. Sy is ook die mederedakteur van “Art and Law – A Comprehensive Guide on Art Law in South Africa” wat in 2023 gepubliseer is. Haar eweknie-geëvalueerde publikasies handel oor onderwerpe soos kopiereg in die musiekbedryf en die ontwikkeling van intellektuele goedereg in die digitale omgewing.
