ABOUT THE

PAVOCAT STELLENBOSCH ACADEMY

The Pavocat Stellenbosch Academy (PSA) was created in 2021 as a collaboration between the Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University and the Pavocat Group.

The main aim of the PSA is to develop and deliver relevant, focused and highly practical short courses for professionals practising in the fields of counter-corruption, laws of conflict and related fields of law, and which are intended to assist in countering corruption and to improve adherence to laws of conflict globally. The PSA will also analyse the possibilities, appropriate approaches and methodologies to providing research and technical assistance in those  fields.

By means of the PSA, the academic expertise of Stellenbosch University and highly practical experience of Pavocat, earned at the coalface of counter-corruption and law of conflict struggles around the world, are combined in a synergy that can offer gold-standard training to have a real impact in addressing corruption, compliance and law of conflict  challenges in highly focused and customised ways.

The PSA is based in and ordinarily operates from Stellenbosch University’s Law Faculty, but its courses can be delivered in a variety of ways and in any given jurisdiction. Without exception, all of the short courses offered by the PSA  (1) are accredited by Stellenbosch University; (2) are taught by expert practitioners with decades of experience; (3) reach the rigorous academic standards expected by and from Africa’s foremost university; and (4) are highly practical in nature and directly relevant in their application. Depending upon their nature, the course may run to up to three weeks.  They are designed and intended to enhance the professionalism and effectiveness of practitioners engaged in countering corruption or in combat or security in its varied forms.

The PSA is governed by a Board, consisting of:

Mr Lee Marler (chair) Mr James Johnstone
Mr James Stuart Prof Sope Williams-Elegbe
Prof Geo Quinot

Dr Delano van der Linde

The PSA secretariat is administered by Ms Vuyiseka Klaas.

The PSA is further supported by a group of strategic advisors, that includes Prof Thuli Madonsela, former Public Protector of South Africa and current Law Trust Chair in Social Justice at Stellenbosch University: Prof MS Tshehla, Dean of Military Science, Stellenbosch University, Mr Kevin Malunga, former Deputy Public Protector of South Africa; General The Lord Richards of Hertmonceux, former Chief of the British Army and Chief of the UK Defence Staff; The Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, former Secretary General of NATO and Chairman of the North Atlantic Council and UK Secretary of State for Defence; and Lieutenant General Jasbir Lidder, former Three Star General in the Indian Army, Chief of Staff UN Mission in Mozambique.
