At the December 2014 graduation ceremony Prof AJ van der Walt was awarded Stellenbosch University’s prestigious Chancellor’s Award as recognition for his continued excellence in the area of research.
Prof van der Walt, a Distinguished Professor of Property Law, was one of the first five academics from the social sciences and humanities across the country to receive an A-rating from the National Research Foundation. He has since held an A1 rating, a category that is awarded if a researcher is “recognised by all reviewers as a leading scholar in his field internationally for the high quality and wide impact of his recent research outputs”. In 2014, he became the first non-United States scholar to receive the merit award of the Association for Law, Property and Society. He was also awarded the Tijdschrift voor Privaatrecht visiting chair to Belgium and the Netherlands for the years 2014 to 2015. He has held the research chair in Property Law at Stellenbosch University since 2002.
