At this significant event child rights experts from both South Africa and abroad will be discussing the important implications of Article 6 of the CRC (the child’s right to life, survival and development).

The Committee on the Rights of the Child, the body monitoring the implementation of the CRC, identified four principles as the guiding principles of the Convention. These are the general prohibition against discrimination (Article 2); the consideration of the best interests of the child as a primary consideration in all matters affecting the child (Article 3); the right to life, survival and development (Article 6) and the right of participation in decisions affecting the child (Article 12). At a colloquium held in Auckland, New Zealand a year ago, Article 12 of the Convention was the topic of conversation. Judging from the abstracts received from participants for this year’s event, the papers to be presented are likely to initiate some thought provoking and perhaps controversial discussions.

Anyone who is interested in attending the colloquium during the course of the two days, must please contact Ms Yolandi Filander at yolandi@sun.ac.za or 021 808 4853 for further details.

Download the PROGRAMME

We thank our sponsors

The Faculty of Law, Stellenbosch University is proud to this year host the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) Colloquium from 25 – 26 March 2014.
