The publications we hold start from 1885 and focus on campus life, sport, politics, art and literature and other entertainment.<\/p>\n<p>One of the earliest student publications in our collection is the <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.sun.ac.za\/handle\/10019.2\/18808\"><strong><em>Stellenbosch College Ramkie<\/em><\/strong><\/a> dating back to 1885.\u00a0 Volume II no. 8 of 11 March 1885 starts with the words:<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0\u201cThe voice of reason readily commands the ear of the student.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2186 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie5-580x262.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie5-580x262.png 580w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie5.png 602w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>These are handwritten documents, not always easily readable and only four pages long.\u00a0 With the papers as brittle and damaged as it is, digitisation is a wonderful way of preserving them.\u00a0 When scanning and uploading the documents to SUNDigital, the authenticity of the publications becomes more visible.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.sun.ac.za\/handle\/10019.2\/18189\"><strong><em>Stellenbosch College Times<\/em><\/strong><\/a> followed the <strong>Ramkie<\/strong> and was published between August 1885 and September 1886 and the short-lived <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.sun.ac.za\/handle\/10019.2\/18807\"><strong><em>The Victorian<\/em><\/strong><\/a> in 1888. The digitisation of the printed <a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.sun.ac.za\/handle\/10019.2\/19414\"><strong><em>Stellenbosch Students Annual<\/em><\/strong><\/a> \u00a01892- 1897 and the <strong>Stellenbosch Students&#8217; Quarterly<\/strong>, Vol 1-23\u00a0 (1898 \u2013 1920) is still ongoing.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2177 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie2-580x262.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie2-580x262.jpg 580w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie2-676x306.jpg 676w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie2.jpg 752w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2174 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"516\" height=\"513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie1.jpg 516w, https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2023\/11\/Matie1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 516px) 100vw, 516px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/digital.lib.sun.ac.za\/handle\/10019.2\/15475\"><strong><em>&#8220;Die Matie\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/a> was the official student newspaper of Stellenbosch University since 1 August 1941.
