{"id":332,"date":"2020-05-08T08:39:05","date_gmt":"2020-05-08T08:39:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/?p=332"},"modified":"2020-05-08T08:39:05","modified_gmt":"2020-05-08T08:39:05","slug":"how-can-you-improve-your-impact-as-author-researcher","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/2020\/05\/08\/how-can-you-improve-your-impact-as-author-researcher\/","title":{"rendered":"How can you improve your impact as author\/researcher?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week the Library presented a workshop on <em>Maximising your research impact<\/em>. <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2020\/05\/Maximising-your-research-impact_2020.pdf\">You are welcome to view the powerpoint here<\/a>, but herewith also a short summary of important steps to take:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Make sure to publish strategically<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Carefully take note of the Instructions to Authors of the specific journal<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.sun.ac.za\/c.php?g=742976&amp;p=5571650\">Be careful of predatory publishers<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Publish Open Access, not only your final product, but also your research data (SUNScholarData), code (Github), software, presentations(Slideshare), working papers<\/li>\n<li>Journal metrics: Use Web of Science or Scopus for analysing journal metrics in order to make sure you publish in a high impact journal (Journal Impact Factor, Citescore, SNIP, Scimago Journal Rank, etc)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun.ac.za\/english\/research-innovation\/Research-Development\/outputs-accredited-journals\/accredited-journals\">Make sure the journal is accredited<\/a> to receive subsidy from the DHET<\/li>\n<li>Create a unique author identifier to ensure that you are able to track citations to your research and that your research can be found continuously (<a href=\"http:\/\/libguides.sun.ac.za\/ORCID\">ORCID library guide<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Measure your author and article impact<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Citation analysis is a way of measuring the impact of an author, an article, by counting the number of times that author, article or publication has been cited by other works.<\/li>\n<li>Use different author metrics and not only the H-Index (G-Index and M-Index for example)<\/li>\n<li>Also consider other aspects of a candidate\u2019s career, such as discipline, and how many collaborators a researcher works with, etc.<\/li>\n<li>Remember to measure your social media posts, media mentions, readers, downloads of articles, etc. with Altmetrics (Altmetric.com, Plum Analytics in Scopus and Ebsco, ImpactStory, etc)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Networking: Know how to find collaborators<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>ResearchGate<\/li>\n<li>Academia<\/li>\n<li>Social Science Research Network<\/li>\n<li>Mendeley<\/li>\n<li>LinkedIn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Promote your work with Social Media and other public engagement<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Actively make time for public engagement<\/li>\n<li>Use Facebook, Twitter to promote your research<\/li>\n<li>Start a blog or personal website about your research\/research group<\/li>\n<li>Learn about which research will make the news: <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sun.ac.za\/libraryresearchnews\/files\/2020\/05\/Newsworthy-infographic.pdf\">Newsworthy-infographic<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Other useful reading on the topic:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"B8FyhpFigC\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/newsletter-library\/65-research-guide\/\">Maximizing your Research Impact<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"&#8220;Maximizing your Research Impact&#8221; &#8212; IESE Library\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; clip: rect(1px, 1px, 1px, 1px);\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.iese.edu\/newsletter-library\/65-research-guide\/embed\/#?secret=B8FyhpFigC\" data-secret=\"B8FyhpFigC\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/authorservices.taylorandfrancis.com\/category\/published\/\">Taylor and Francis&#8217; author guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lib.berkeley.edu\/scholarly-communication\/publishing\/research-impact\">University of Berkeley Library Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nNeed any assistance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Contact: <a href=\"mailto:mr@sun.ac.za\">Mari\u00e9 Roux<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this week the Library presented a workshop on Maximising your research impact.
