This stressful, high pressure environment has lead to a high prevalence of anxiety, depression and even suicide in the health care profession.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jwLWP _2hXa7 _1dPe8 blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"23t9n\" data-offset-key=\"1ai6b-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1ai6b-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1ai6b-0-0\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jwLWP _2hXa7 _1dPe8 blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"23t9n\" data-offset-key=\"ad4eb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ad4eb-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ad4eb-0-0\">Dr Middleton, GP and Chief Medical Officer of Medical Director\u2019s&nbsp;explains:<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<div data-offset-key=\"ad4eb-0-0\"><strong>&#8220;Expectations as\u202f \u202fhealth professional in what we hope to achieve, how we envision what \u2018ideal\u2019 healthcare looks like from those early years as a student, and the reality of the day-to-day challenges of patient care, can leave us feeling disillusioned. Unsupported, it can wear us down mentally and physically, and&nbsp;more often than not, it\u2019s a daily struggle&#8221;<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div data-offset-key=\"ad4eb-0-0\">\n<div class=\"jwLWP _2hXa7 _1dPe8 blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"23t9n\" data-offset-key=\"1di84-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"1di84-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"1di84-0-0\">Recent <\/span><a class=\"_2qJYG\" href=\"http:\/\/www.samj.org.za\/index.php\/samj\/article\/view\/5503\/4131\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"1di84-1-0\">studies<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"1di84-2-0\"> conducted within South Africa have highlighted alarming statistics regarding the mental well-being of primary health care providers and medicals students. Approximately one third of South Africans medical students have contemplated suicide during their studies, some of which resulted in physical manifestation of attempted suicide and death. These findings underscore the need for active intervention, to ensure the health and well-being of our future doctors.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jwLWP _2hXa7 _1dPe8 blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"23t9n\" data-offset-key=\"38jep-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"38jep-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"38jep-0-0\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jwLWP _2hXa7 _1dPe8 blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"23t9n\" data-offset-key=\"4oq8p-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"4oq8p-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"4oq8p-0-0\">In 2019, the <\/span><a class=\"_2qJYG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/mental_health\/evidence\/burn-out\/en\/\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"4oq8p-1-0\">World Health <\/span><\/a><a class=\"_2qJYG\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/mental_health\/evidence\/burn-out\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-offset-key=\"4oq8p-2-0\">Organisation<\/span><\/a><span data-offset-key=\"4oq8p-3-0\"> declared &#8216;burnout&#8217; as a legitimate occupational phenomenon, resulting from chronic workplace stress, that demotes how well a person performs at work.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jwLWP _2hXa7 _1dPe8 blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"23t9n\" data-offset-key=\"ftmaq-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"ftmaq-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"ftmaq-0-0\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"jwLWP _2hXa7 _1dPe8 blog-post-text-font blog-post-text-color\" data-block=\"true\" data-editor=\"23t9n\" data-offset-key=\"41o15-0-0\">\n<div class=\"public-DraftStyleDefault-block public-DraftStyleDefault-ltr\" data-offset-key=\"41o15-0-0\"><span data-offset-key=\"41o15-0-0\">Recognising signs of anxiety, depression, burnout and suicidal inclinations are the first step to seeking help &#8211; and include: sleep disturbances, social disconnect, emotional instability, loss of appetite, restlessness and suicidal thoughts .Apart from this, it is also important to identify the causes associated with one&#8217;s mental health and develop a strategy on how to best manage and overcome these challenges;
