Staff members, postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the Department of Microbiology were among the more than 100 judges who served at the Stellenbosch regional competition of the Eskom Expo for Young Scientists. The Department and the Senior Research Chair in Biofuels and other Alternative Clean Fuels also sponsored category prizes. The Expo was organised by the Institute for Mathematics and Science Teaching at Stellenbosch University (IMSTUS), in conjunction with the Faculty of Science. Nearly 350 learners from 35 schools in the Boland, Overberg, West Coast, Southern Cape and Northern Suburbs took part. Hazile Rabe of Vredenburg High, won the award for the best research project about biofuels or bioenergy, which was sponsored by the Senior Research Chair in Biofuels.

Personeel, nagraadse studente en nadoktorale genote van die Departement Mikrobiologie het diens as beoordelaars gedoen by die afgelope Stellenbosch-streeksbyeenkoms van die Eskom Expo vir Jong Wetenskaplikes. Daarby het die Departement, asook die Senior Leerstoel vir Biobrandstowwe kategoriepryse geborg. Die Expo is gereël deur die US se Instituut vir Wiskunde en Wetenskap Onderwys (IWWOUS) in die Fakulteit Opvoedkunde, in samewerking met die Fakulteit Natuurwetenskappe, en het ten doel om wetenskaplike navorsingsbeginsels in skole te bevorder. Bykand 350 leerders van 35 skole in die Boland, Overberg, Noordelike Voorstede, Weskus en Suid-Kaap het deelgeneem. Hazile Rabe van Hoërskool Vredenburg, het die toekenning vir die beste navorsingsprojek oor biobrandstof of bioenergie ontvang.
