Die Departement Genetika het 'n trotse geskiedenis wat teruggevoer kan word na 1898, toe die Landboukollege Stellenbosch gestig is, maar dit het amptelik in 1925 ontstaan uit die Departement Landbou Plantkunde. Vandag verteenwoordig die Departement 'n interdissiplin\u00eare groep navorsers en nagraadse studente wat fokus op navorsingsgeleenthede in plant-, dier- en menslike genetika. Sy missie is om 'n omgewing te kweek waarin Genetika as kernwetenskap kan dien as basis vir die kreatiewe ontwikkeling van menslike hulpbronne tot voordeel van die individu, die bre\u00ebr samelewing, sowel as die omgewing.<\/p>\n

Maar wat is Genetika? Genetika is die studie van hoe biologiese inligting geberg, oorgedra, vertolk en uitgedruk word. Dit vorm dus 'n sentrale pilaar vir biologie en oorvleuel ook met talle terreine soos landbou, geneeskunde en biotegnologie. In Genetika sal jy leer van gene, oorerwing, en genetiese variasie in lewende organismes. Dit beteken dat ons die fisiologiese gedrag van 'n lewende organisme, soos bv. \u2018n plant, dier of mens kan begryp \u00e9n voorspel.<\/p>\n

Indien jy vir \u2018n BSc-graad inskryf, kan jy of BSc (Molekul\u00eare Biologie en Biotegnologie) of BSc (Menslike Lewenswetenskappe met Biologie) studeer, en indien jy vir \u2018n BScAgric-graad inskryf, kan jy of BScAgric (Gewasproduksie) of BScAgric (Diereproduksie) swot. \u2018n BSc-graad duur drie jaar met die opsie van \u2018n addisionele vierde jaar vir verwerwing van die graad HonsBSc. \u2018n BScAgric-graad se studietyd is vier jaar.<\/p>\n
