Grond is 'n medium vir plantgroei, 'n habitat vir verskillende spesies, 'n filtrasiestelsel vir oppervlakwater en die instandhouding van atmosferiese gasse. Kortliks: grond is 'n uiters belangrike natuurlike hulpbron. Die Departement Grondkunde fokus op die belangrikheid van gronde as 'n baie stadig hernubare en noodsaaklike natuurlike hulpbron. Dit behels die studie van die eienskappe en prosesse wat in gronde voorkom, sowel as die volhoubare gebruik en bestuur van gronde. Dit is 'n onontbeerlike studieveld vir volhoubare voedselproduksie.<\/p>\n

Gespesialiseerde velde in Grondkunde is (a) Pedologie, wat die studie van die oorsprong, vorming, klassifikasie en kartering van grond insluit, (b) Grondfisika, wat die fisiese eienskappe behels, soos waterretensie en -beweging, waterbestuur en besproeiing, sowel as bewerkings- en verbouingspraktyke, (c) Grondchemie, wat die chemiese eienskappe van grond bestudeer, insluitend plantvoeding, bemesting en rehabilitasie, en (d) Grondbiologie, wat handel oor die lewende organismes in grond en hoe hulle met mekaar, plante, fisiese en chemiese eienskappe, interaksie het.<\/p>\n
