South Africa is a high burden DR-TB country. In 2017, the World Health Organization estimated that there are 558,000 incident cases of Rifampicin Resistant Tuberculosis (RR-TB) and MDR-TB in the world. Of these, only 139,114 received treatment under programmatic conditions. During the same period, South Africa initiated 10,722 cases of RR-TB and MDR-TB which is approximately 10 % of the global cohort for that year.
The purpose is to equip health care professionals with the clinical knowledge and skills required to support intensified efforts in identifying TB, diagnosis, treatment, care of all clients.
Medical Doctors; registered Professional Nurses, Enrolled Nurses
The training is HPCSA accredited for 22 CEUs.
All participants who complete the training will be awarded with CPD accredited attendance certificates.
COURSE CONTENT
The following topics will be covered:
- Global TB/ DR- TB epidemiology
- TB pathogenesis and transmission.
- Drug-drug interactions and side effects of ARV’s.
- TB preventative therapy (TPT), Co-trimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT) and Fluconazole.
- Management of patients returning to care after a period of treatment interruption.
- High viral load management and ART resistance.
- Post-exposure prophylactics:
- Occupational exposure, cases of sexual assault.
- Pre-exposure prophylactics:
- HIV negative people with high risk of HIV acquisition.
- Associated conditions:
- Dermatological conditions.
- Neurological conditions.
- Respiratory conditions.
- Gastro-intestinal conditions.
- Adherence, counselling and support services.
