Camilla exploring alternative ways of sustainable Living

    Pre-departure:

Working up to the trip in Nepal a lot of preparation had to go into packing and being fully prepared to deal with all the situations we would face up in the mountains trekking as well as in foreign cities, and all the different forms of travelling in between. If I could give a few tips of advice to anyone planning to do the Nepal experiential module through the Sustainability Institute this is how it would go…

Firstly a fully comprehensive travelling medical kit, insect repellants and allergy tablets are a must! Make sure you have a few rehydrates as well in case you get the runs or incase you get too much sun on one of the days as I did! You never have enough sunscreen or soap. But probably most importantly you need to consider that you are going to be travelling to some pristine parts of the Himalaya Mountains and it is best travelling practice to make sure you leave no trace. Ensuring your products are bio-degradable and eco-friendly is important.

    The American Dream by Eloise

    Pre-departure:

The day we booked our tickets to Boston, MA was the day it all sank in. For the first time we realised that we are really doing this.  Mri, Chanel and I are really going to AMERICA for the very first time!! Our minds immediately started to twirl as we thought about Central Park, Boston Common, The Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Museums, BROADWAY and of course, Times Square.

We started planning everything in detail, as it is very important to be organised, prepared and knowledgeable about where you are going, where you are staying and prices of everything.  If you know precisely how to get to the place you’re staying in America, it is much, much easier to use the Subway (although it can be a bit confusing in the beginning).  Preparation also equals LESS STRESS.  If you are in an unknown country, you don’t know where you are and nobody stops to even look at you or help you, you will start to stress.  Therefore to prevent this stress, you should know where you are going and how to get there.

Francois at Renmin University of China

At some stage in my life I realized how important travelling is to me. I realized that a trip overseas is so much more than an opportunity to unwind or relax, but that it remains the only way to truly experience, and gain an appreciation of a foreign culture. I am a second year BSc Computer Science student and I had always been interested in university exchange opportunities. I had been to the typical travel destinations in the West, so when I saw the opportunity to go to China on the website of the Postgraduate & International Office I decided to go for it.
