Congratulations to Dr. Lucinda Baatjies, for her well-deserved recognition by the National Research Foundation (NRF)  in being awarded the Thuthuka post-PhD funding for the next three years. The NRF Thuthuka funding instrument seeks to promote the establishment of a transformed, internationally competitive and sustainable research workforce by providing the necessary support to emerging researchers within South Africa and aid in their professional development.

Dr. Baatjies serves as a Scientist at Vuyo Lab within the Division of MBHG. Her research endeavours focus on identifying plants and their compounds to elucidate their potential for lifesaving medications to treat various diseases.   Additionally, she explores drug repurposing, which seeks innovative ways to utilize existing drugs approved for alternative use.

Dr Baaitjie’s current project centres on the repurposing of apoptosis and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) for TB treatment. This approach is promising e due to its potential to expedite drug development processes, reduce costs, mitigate risks associated with new drug discovery, and uncover novel therapeutic targets.

By investing in repurposing initiatives, we stand to harness the full potential of existing drugs in combating TB, enhancing health outcomes and improving the quality of life for people in communities burdened by this disease.
