Professor Moodley completed her undergraduate medical training in 1988 at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, her postgraduate training in Family Medicine (cum laude) at Stellenbosch University, her Masters in Philosophy (Applied Ethics) (cum laude) in 1999, and her Doctorate in Bioethics in 2004
Stuart Rennie is Associate Professor in Social Medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (USA), Core Faculty at the UNC Bioethics Center and former co-Chair of UNC’s Institutional Review Board for behavioral research. He obtained his Masters in Anthropology and PhD in philosophy from the University of Leuven, Belgium. Prof. Rennie’s current teaching and research interests focus on research ethics, public health ethics and medical ethics in developing countries, primarily in sub-Saharan Africa. He is currently co-Principal Investigator of two NIH/Fogarty International Center bioethics capacity building projects in Central Francophone Africa and South Africa. He is also co-Principal Investigator of a study on the ethical and social implications of HIV cure research, with study sites in the USA, China and South Africa.
Jean Cadigan is an associate professor in the Department of Social Medicine at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, as well as a core faculty member in UNC’s Center for Bioethics. She received her PhD in anthropology from the University of California, Los Angeles.
Walter Jaoko is a Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medical Microbiology, the Deputy Director of KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, at the University of Nairobi, and an Extraordinary Professor of Medicine at Stellenbosch University, South Africa since 2016. He is a holder of a Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of Nairobi, a Masters of Tropical Medicine degree from University of Liverpool, and a PhD in Medical Microbiology from University of Nairobi.
He also has a Diploma in Research Methodology from University of Copenhagen, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Research Ethics (cum laude) from Stellenbosch University
Marlo Möller is an associate professor and has worked in the field of human genetic susceptibility since joining the TB Host Genetics group as a BSc(Hons) student in 2004. She received her PhD in 2007 from Stellenbosch University and is currently the holder of a prestigious Research Career Advancement Fellowship from the South African National Research Foundation. She is involved in several host genetic susceptibility to tuberculosis projects (some in the department and some together with international collaborators from Germany and the USA) which include tuberculous meningitis susceptibility, the role of ancestry in TB disease and primary immune deficiencies.
Dr Andrea Palk completed her studies in philosophy at Stellenbosch University in 2018, after also having worked as a part-time lecturer and research assistant in the department for a number of years. In May 2020, she was appointed as a permanent lecturer in the philosophy department at Stellenbosch University Her research areas include various themes within bioethics (neuroethics, genethics and global mental health ethics), moral philosophy and the philosophy of psychiatry.
Theresa Rossouw is Professor in the Department of Immunology at the University of Pretoria. Her research interests encompass a wide spectrum of HIV-related work, spanning from the basic sciences where she predominantly focuses on HIV-associated drug resistance and systemic immune activation, to the clinical and social sciences, where she has been involved in exploring the socio-ethical aspects of HIV/AIDS for more than a decade
Dr Carl Lombard obtained his PhD from the University of the Orange Free State (UOFS). He has been involved in the design, analysis, reporting and training in pragmatic trials and surveys at national, provincial and local community settings in South Africa. Carl has worked in the evaluation of national programs in South Africa such the HIV antenatal survey and the MTCT program. . He has a long standing collaboration with the entities from the University of Cape Town such as the Knowledge Translation Unit, National Department of Health and the Desmond Tutu TB Centre at SU. In total, he has more than 30 years of experience working in the field of biostatistics and collaborated on many training workshops related to biostatistics, research methodology, and pragmatic trials.
Dr Adetayo Emmanuel Obasa is currently a lecturer and ARESA postgraduate coordinator in the Centre for Medical Ethics and Law, Department of Medicine at the Stellenbosch University. Dr Obasa completed his MSc and PhD studies at the Division of Medical Virology. In 2020, he completed his Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Ethics at Stellenbosch University.
