Iimbovane took part in this year’s Science Expo that was held on Friday 5th August 2011 at Swartberg Primary School. Several schools from the Overberg district were also present at the Expo and they showcased their projects which consisted of interesting topics such as recycling, human sense of smell, how to keep cut flowers fresher for longer, to name but a few.

The Iimbovane project, which aims at monitoring ant biodiversity, was first in line to present their talk entitled Backyard Biodiversity.  Learners were thrilled to learn that ants play a vital role in our ecosystem and that some species can even be used as food by humans! The talk was followed by an exhibition of various ant species from the project. This exhibition gave learners the opportunity to view specimens under the microscope, ask questions and interact with Iimbovane team members.  Assisting at our exhibition stand was Paulette Fortuin, a Grade 10 learner from Swartberg Secondary School which is one of Iimbovane’s participatory schools.

“It’s always a pleasure to have Iimbovane around. Our Life Science learners have benefitted immensely from your involvement at our schools. Do keep it up and we hope to see you again in the nearest future” said Mr Heinrich Adonis, WCED Curriculum Advisor for Life Sciences of the Overberg District, who has been involved with Iimbovane from his teaching days at Emil Weder Secondary School.
