The empowerment of life science educators and their learners through the donation of teaching equipment is a central part of what the Iimbovane Outreach Project does.

Impoverished schools lack basic classroom technology such as microscopes and multimedia projectors, which makes teaching and practical exercises a real challenge for educators and learners. However, thanks to the financial support from the Rand Merchant Bank Fund and AfriSam, the Iimbovane Outreach Project has been able to assist several schools with such important study equipment.

Malibu High School in Blue Downs and Breërivier High School in Worcester is two of the most recent schools who each received a brand new Leica EZ4 stereomicroscope and a multimedia projector from the Iimbovane Outreach Project. By using the equipment in combination with a laptop, the educators are now able to display samples under the microscope, via the data projector, to the whole class.

“The microscope and the data projector will greatly enhance our teaching and learning and will serve many generations of Malibu learners. It addresses a current shortage and brightens our outlook for 2013,” said Mr Strydom, Head of the Life Sciences Department, after receiving the equipment.

Malibu High School and Breërivier High School both joined the Iimbovane Outreach Project as Sugar Ant schools in 2010 and have since been involved in several of the project’s training events.

Iimbovane looks forward to many such donations in the future.
