The Western Cape Education Department’s (WCED) Careers Expo is always a highlight on the Iimbovane Project’s calendar. 2014 was no exception and Iimbovane was there in full force – visible, active and interacting with learners from the Overberg education district.

The WCED’s Careers Expo is an annual event where Grade 11 and 12 learners are invited to learn more about careers in the field of biodiversity. This year’s event took place on the 1st of August 2014 at Overberg Primary School in Caledon.

The Iimbovane Outreach Project had an important role to play in showcasing the field of environmental and biodiversity science, as well as giving the learners guidance on subject choices and tertiary institution entry requirements. After handing out brochures, learners were given the chance to take part in a competition that involved the identification of different ant species under a microscope. This promoted learner interaction at our display and increased their curiosity of insect morphology.

The interactive discussions by the Iimbovane Project team attracted a large number of learners to the exhibit and they were very intrigued by the insects on display, not knowing there was such a vast variety in the Western Cape.

Other organisations who were present at the expo included the Cape Leopard Trust, the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) and Cape Nature.
