Since this weekend, access to the residential segment on the SU network has been extremely unstable.

IT’s network engineers have been working since Monday on finding a solution to the problem. HUAWEI and First Tech have also been consulted to assist with the trouble shooting process.

We are well aware of the inconvenience caused by this network instability, especially at such a critical time of year.

Be assured that we are doing everything within our power to resolve the situation as soon as possible.

Daar word sedert die afgelope naweek ernstige probleme met die netwerktoegang  op die koshuissegment van die US-netwerk ondervind.

IT se netwerkingenieurs werk sedert Maandag onverspoosd aan `n oplossing vir die probleem.  HUAWEI en First Tech is sedertdien ook betrek om die proses te probeer bespoedig.

Ons is deeglik bewus van die ongerief wat die huidige netwerk-onstabiliteit veroorsaak, veral gedurende hierdie kritieke tyd van die jaar.

Wees asseblief verseker dat ons alles binne ons vermoë doen om die situasie so gou as moontlik op te los.

Lost your cell phone?Selfoon voete gekry?

You know that sinking feeling when you realise you’re lost your wallet/phone/keys? Well, we can help you with the lost phone …

If your cell phone has been stolen, there are ways to prevent whoever has your phone from accessing your data and personal information. Some applications can even track the location of your phone.

Which method you use, depends on the phone you use.

1. BlackBerry

BlackBerry Protect is a free application able to assist you with locating your BlackBerry and to ensure that your data is safe.

If you lose your BlackBerry, you can log on to the BlackBerry Protect website and lock your device to make sure the person who has it, can’t use it. If you’re pretty sure you won’t be seeing your phone again, you can remove your data and SD card via the website.

If you are registered on Blackberry’s Enterprise Server, the device can also be wiped on the server side.

If you merely lost your phone, there’s also the option to lock your phone and display a message on the screen for whoever finds your phone. By means of GPS, it’s possible to establish your phone’s location and find it again. Or, if you suspect the device is within hearing distance, just adjust the volume to it’s loudest setting and you’ll be able to find your phone,

Apart from these functions, you can also backup your contacts, calender and bookmarks wirelessly. This can be done automatically and as frequently as you prefer (daily, weekly or monthly)

If you’ve replaced your old BlackBerry with a new one, you also can get your backed up settings, contacts and calender items back with BlackBerry Protect.

2. iPhone

Apple users can user Find My iPhone via the iCloud-fasiliteit.

Sign on at  iCloud.com or use the Find My iPhone app on a different phone to locate your phone on a map, display a message on the screen, lock the phone and display a message or wipe your data.

With iOS 6, iCloud also provides a Lost Mode, which makes it even easier to lock your phone with a four digit password and send a message to the phone with a contact number. If the phone is in Lost mode, it will continuously keep track of where the phone was and you’ll be given a report when you sign on to p iCloud.com or on the Find My iPhone app.

3. Android

If  Google Sync is configured on your phone or the Google Apps Device Policy application on your  Android, your data and personal information can be wiped from another device. Use this function when you phone has been stolen or lost. Just keep in mind the remote wipe function will remove ALL device based data  – e-mail, calendars and contacts and reset your phone to it’s initial default factory settings. As jou selfoon gesteel is, is daar maniere om te keer dat wie ookal sy hande op jou selfoon gekry het, nie ook jou data en persoonlike inligting te siene kry nie. Sommige toepassings kan selfs die ligging van jou foon bepaal.

Watter metode jy kan gebruik hang af van watter foon jy het.

1. BlackBerry

BlackBerry Protect is `n gratis toepassing wat jou kan help om jou verlore BlackBerry op te spoor en ook om die inligting daarop veilig te hou.

As jy jou BlackBerry verloor het, kan jy bloot aanteken op die BlackBerry Protect webwerf en jou toestel sluit sodat die persoon wat dit het, dit nie kan gebruik nie. As jy vermoed jy gaan dit nie gou weer sien nie en jy nie wil hê engiemand moet jou persoonlike inligting in die hande kry nie, verwyder net eenvoudig via die webwerf jou inligting en ook jou mikroSD-kaart. As jy geregistreer is as `n gebruiker op Blackberry se Enterprise Server, kan die toestel ook via die bediener skoongevee word.

As jy bloot jou selfoon in die diep donkertes van jou handsak verloor het, is daar die opsie om dit te sluit en `n boodskap op die tuisskerm te laat verskyn vir die persoon wat dit kry. Deur  middel van GPS is dit dan moontlik om die ligging op `n kaart te kry en dit weer te kry. Of, as jy vermoed jou selfoon is binne hoorafstand, stel die volume op sy hardste en jy behoort gou die verlore foon te kan naspeur.

Buiten hiervoor kan die diens ook jou kontakte, kalender en boekmerke wireless rugsteun. Laasgenoemde word outomaties gedoen en so gereeld soos jy verkies (daagliks, maandeliks of weekliks).

Indien jy `n nuwe BlackBerry gekoop het, kan jy met BlackBerry Protect jou toestel gerugsteunde verstellings, kontakte en kalenderitems weer terugkry.

2. iPhone

Apple-gebruikers kan gebruikmaak van Find My iPhone via die iCloud-fasiliteit.

Teken in by iCloud.com of gebruik die Find My iPhone toepassing op `n ander toestel om jou foon op `n kaart op te spoor, `n boodskap op sy skerm te vertoon, die toestel slegs toeganklik te maak dmv ‘n wagwoord, of om jou data te uit te vee.

Met iOS 6, bied iCloud ook Lost Mode, wat dit nog makliker maak om jou foon op te spoor. Lost Mode sluit dadelik jou foon met `n viersyfer wagwoord en stuur `n boodskap na die foon met `n kontaknommer.  

As die foon in Lost Mode is, hou dit ook deurentyd rekord van waar dit was en gee dit aan jou `n verslag wanneer jy aanteken op iCloud.com of op die Find My iPhone toepassing.

3. Android 

Indien Google Sync gekonfigureer is op jou foon of die Google Apps Device Policy toepassing op jou Android, kan jy ook jou data vanaf `n ander toestel afvee. Gebruik hierdie funksie as jou foon gesteel of verlore is om die data op die toestel af te vee en te herstel na sy oorspronklike formaat.

Onthou net, as jy die remote wipe-funksie gebruik, word alle toestel-gebaseerde data heeltemal afgevee – e-pos, kalender en kontakte. Dit kan egter nie die data wat op die SD-kaart is verwyder nie.

New procedures for setting up Outlook on Android causes confusionNuwe prosedures vir Outlook-opstelling op Android veroorsaak verwarring

Since the recent Exchange upgrade a few people have been confronted with a few unusual questions when trying to set up Outlook on their Android phones.Fortunately the process is less intimidating than it seems at first glance.

After the standard Outlook setup on your Android (click here for the full instructions),  “Activate device administrator” will appear, prompting you to select a long list of options, for example Erase all data, Change Screen unlock password, Password recovery . Do not be alarmed as this is standard for setting up Exchange/Outlook on any Android phone. This just indicates what the app is capable of doing. Other cell phone operating systems include the same settings, but it’s not always displayed to the user when the programme is being installed.

The text being displayed is therefore standard for the specific Android application – IT has no control over the text it displays. It is also standard practice at various universities using MS Exchange.

One of the options is – Erase all data: Perform a factory reset, deleting all of your data without any confirmation. This option in particular led to many questions. If we look at the Exchange implementation, it’s very clear that the only person who has access to this function and can actually wipe the device, is the mailbox owner himself.

These and other advantages  and additional e-mail functionality, is available to Android users on www.sun.ac.za/webmail. In webmail, under Options -> See All Options -> Phone -> Mobile Phones there are various functions available:

Sync Logging: Enables you to look at the synchronisation of your phone, to select what you want synchronised, which servers should be used, etc.

Remote Wipe: With this option, you can wipe your phone’s data (contacts, photos, etc.) if it ever gets into the wrong hands. The phone will then be reset to it’s default factory settings. ONLY the registered e-mail user will have access to this function, no one else has access.

Details: Shows exactly which devices is linked, model, software versions, etc. 

Delete Device: This removes the connection between the Exchange and the selected device. If you initiate this via webmail, the person who has your phone will not be able to reinstall the mailbox. Your data stays protected.

Met die onlangse opgradering van Exchange is gebruikers gekonfronteer met `n paar ongewone vrae as hulle e-pos wou opstel op Android-fone. Maar eintlik is dit minder intimiderend as wat dit met eerste oogopslag lyk.

Die teks wat vertoon word is standaard vir die spesifieke Android-toepassing – IT het geen beheer daaroor nie. Dis ook standardpraktyk by verskeie universiteite wat MS Exchange gebruik.

Vanselfsprekend het hierdie opsie veral vrae laat ontstaan. As ons egter na die Exchange-implementasie kyk, is dit duidelik dat die posbuseienaar die enigste persoon is wat die handstuk kan skoonvee.

Hierdie en ook ander voordele en ekstra e-pos funksionaliteit, is na installasie aan die Androidgebruiker beskikbaar op www.sun.ac.za/webmail. In webmail, onder Options -> See All Options -> Phone -> Mobile Phones is daar verskeie funksies beskikbaar aan gebruikers.

Delete Device: Dit verwyder die verbinding van Exchange se kant af na die toestel.Indien jy dit doen via webmail, sal die persoon wat jou foon het nie weer `n Exchange-opstelling kan doen nie. Jou data bly dus beskerm.

How to save battery life on you cell phoneHoe om jou foonbattery langer te laat hou

In a previous post we gave you some tips on saving your cell phone’s battery life and received such a positive response, we decided to continue with a follow-up.

The demand and expectation to be available and connected at all times, is constantly increasing. However, few things are as frustrating as having to make an important call or send an e-mail and our phone suddenly dies on you.

A dead cell phone battery is inevitable, but you can take small measures to ensure that it does last a little bit longer.

1. Wi-fi, 3G and Bluetooth

If any of these functions are activated by default they will constantly try to connect to any available service or device in the area. If you do need to be connected all the time, disable them and connect when needed.

2. Back light

Do you really need a bright back light on your screen in the middle of the day? Your phone needs energy to generate the light and the brighter the screen, the more battery life you sacrifice. Rather set the light less bright.

3. Apps

Sure, it’s very cool having all the latest apps giving you all sorts of information. Just keep in mind that apps need a lot of power to run.Power you might need to make an important call.

4. GPS

Using your GPS for checking in on Twitter or other social networks may be handy, but it will make a huge dent in your battery life. And when your GPS fails and you get lost, how will you make that call?

5. Alerts

Are you one of those forgetful people who has to reminded of every appointment and task on your list every hour? Notifications on cell phones are very handy, but putting your phone on vibrate and receiving regular notifications take up a substantial amount of power.

 In `n vorige skrywe het ons vir julle voorstelle gegee oor hoe om jou selfoon se battery langer te laat hou. Na aanleiding van die positiewe reaksie wat ons gekry het, het ons besluit om nog `n paar idees met julle te deel.

Die verwagting om altyd aanlyn en beskikbaar te wees word by die dag groter en groter. Min dinge is egter so frustrerend soos `n pap battery wanneer jy `n belangrike oproep moet maak of e-pos moet stuur.

`n Pap battery is onvermydellik, maar daar is klein maatreëls wat jy kan tref om daardie ekstra bietjie lewe uit jou foonbattery te kry.

1. Wi-fi, 3G en Bluetooth

Indien enige van bogenoemde funksies voortdurend geaktiveer is, sal jou foon deurlopend probeer om aan die beskikbare dienste in jou omgewng te verbind. As jy nie die hele tyd toegang hoef te hê tot hierdie dienste nie, sit dit eerder af en verbind daaraan soos nodig.

2. Agtergrondlig

Het jy regtig in die middel van die dag `n helder bron van lig agter op jou skerm nodig?  Jou foon het krag nodig om hierdie lig te genereer en hoe helderder die lig vir jou skerm, hoe meer batterykrag offer jy op. Stel eerder die lig dowwer as jy wil krag spaar.

3. Toepassing

Goed, dis lekker om die nuutste toepassings te hê wat vir jou allerhande (soms onnodige) inligting kan gee. Hou net, jou foon het krag nodig om al tien toepassings te laat loop in die agtergrond. En dis krag wat jy dalk later nodig gaan hê as jy `n dringende oproep moet maak.

4. GPS

Om jou GPS te gebruik om op Twitter te wys waar presies jy tans is, mag handig wees, maar dit gaan ook jou batterykrag opsuig. En as jou batterykrag op is en jy verdwaal is jy ook sonder GPS!

5. Alarms en kennisgewings

Is jy geneig om afsprake en take te vergeet? En jou selfoon is so gestel dat dit jou op gereelde basis daaraan herinner? Kennisgewings en alarms op selfone is baie handig, maar as jy jou foon terselfdertyd op vibreer sit, ontneem dit jou van batterykrag.

Out of power?

  • Find out where to switch off 3G on your smart phone. If you disable this function, you’ll save a huge amount of power  – power you might need in case of an emercency.
  • Buy an extra USB cable and store it in your office. If your cellphone battery is out of power or your charger is lost, you can still charge your phone with your pc. These chargers cost less than R80-00 at most shops.
  • A protective cover for your cell phone will prevent it from heating up too fast, using unnecessary energy and battery power.
  • When you charge your battery, place it on a cold or neutral surface and not on a warm area where it will build up heat.

Drive safely

  • All of us aren’t great multitaskers, especially when it comes to driving. Rather get yourself a bluetooth headpiece before you’re fined, or worse, cause an accident. You don’t have to buy the most expensive model on the market, even a basic model, like  this, will do the job.

Keep in contact

  • Save all your contacts in one central place online, for example in a Google account. Smart phones can sync your contacts from the account and you don’t have to struggle to get hold of people when your phone is stolen or decides not to work anymore.

  • Kry ook  ‘n ekstra USB kabel en stoor dit in jou kantoor. As jou selfoonbattery pap is of jou gewone laaier voete kry, kan jy nogsteeds jou selfoon met jou rekenaar laai. Hierdie laaiers is vir minder as R80-00 by die meeste winkels beskikbaar.
  • `n Goeie, beskermende houer vir jou selfoon sal voorkom dat jou foon te vinnig warm word en onnodig  batterykrag gebruik.
  • As jy jou battery laai, sit dit op `n koue of neutrale oppervlak en nie op `n warm area waar dit hitte kan opbou nie.

Ry veilig.

  • Ons is nie almal goeie multitaskers nie, veral nie as dit by bestuur kom nie! Kry liewer vir jou `n bluetooth-kopstuk voor jy `n boete kry, of veel erger, `n ongeluk veroorsaak. Jy hoef nie die duurste model aan te skaf nie, `n basiese model, soos  hierdie een, sal dieselfde doel dien.

Bly in kontak

  • Stoor al jou kontakte op `n sentrale plek op die web, byvoorbeeld op jou Google rekening. Slimfone kan jou kontakte daarvandaan onttrek en jy hoef nie rond te skarrel as jou foon gesteel word of die gees gee nie.
