Annual African Human Rights Moot Court Competition

Stellenbosch Faculty of Law is excited to announce that a team from Stellenbosch will participate in the 23rd Annual African Human Rights Moot Court Competition that will take place in Nairobi, Kenya from the 1st to the 6th of September. The Faculty will hold its own internal qualifying rounds on the 6th and 8th of May. The final of this year’s internal moot round will be judged by judges from the Cape High Court and advocates from the Cape Bar. The two winners will represent Stellenbosch University at the regional competition in Nairobi.

The African Human Rights Moot Competition is the largest annual gathering of lecturers and students on the continent. 1027 teams from 139 universities, representing 49 African countries, have over the last 22 years participated in this premier event. In 2013 Stellenbosch University’s representatives, Simba Rodze and Alma Diamond, successfully made it to the final. The aim of the competition is to expose students to the procedures and instruments that are used when appearing before the African Court of Human and Peoples’ Rights as well as offer them the opportunity to develop litigation skills within a Human Rights context.
