Pathways agreement with Cambridge University

The Faculty of Law has successfully concluded a pathways agreement with the Faculty of Law of Cambridge University. Whilst Cambridge has maintained such agreements with top Australian Universities since 2014, this is the first agreement with a university in Africa.

The agreement allows final year LLB students from Stellenbosch to join the LLM or MCL programmes at Cambridge University after having completed three and a half years of full-time law studies. Successful completion of the LLM or Masters degree in Corporate Law (MCL) at Cambridge will be accepted by Stellenbosch in recognition for the final semester modules of the LLB Program.

Professor Jens M. Scherpe, the Director of International Strategy and Partnerships at Cambridge University commented: “We are delighted to extend our network of pathways agreements, and to forge links with one of the leading African law schools. The pathways agreements attract outstanding students to undertake the LLM or MCL at Cambridge, and we are looking forward to welcoming these students from South Africa to Cambridge.

Prof Nicola Smit, Dean of the Faculty of Law at Stellenbosch University says that “this agreement serves as confirmation that our programmes are held in high regard internationally and it provides an excellent opportunity for our students to receive a prestigious international qualification. The Faculty is understandably very proud of the recognition being granted to our undergraduate programmes and looks forward to the strengthening of academic ties with one of the world’s top universities”.

Stellenbosch law students interested in this programme, must independently apply to Cambridge University during their penultimate year of their LLB degree and must take note of Cambridge’s relevant application procedures and deadlines.  Selection criteria apply and successful students will commence their studies at Cambridge University in October of their final year of the LLB programme. Once students have completed the full degree requirements at Cambridge University for the award of the LLM or MCL, Stellenbosch will credit students for the modules in the final semester of the LLB and students will graduate from Stellenbosch University.
