About this course

PURPOSE OF THE TRAINING

The purpose is to provide a basic understanding of the theoretical knowledge and clinical skills required to support, care and clinically manage all persons living with HIV/ AIDS and associated infections

COURSE CONTENT

The following topics will be covered:

  • HIV basics – prevention, transmission, testing and staging.
  • Anti-retroviral therapy – screening, eligibility, initiation, regimens and referral.
  • Drug-drug interactions and side effects of ARV’s.
  • TB preventative therapy (TPT), Co-trimoxazole preventive therapy (CPT) and Fluconazole.
  • Management of patients returning to care after a period of treatment interruption.
  • High viral load management and ART resistance.
  • Post-exposure prophylactics:
  • Occupational exposure, cases of sexual assault.
  • Pre-exposure prophylactics:
  • HIV negative people with high risk of HIV acquisition.
  • Associated conditions:
  • Dermatological conditions.
  • Neurological conditions.
  • Respiratory conditions.
  • Gastro-intestinal conditions.
  • Adherence, counselling and support services.

TRAINING ACCREDITATION

The training is HPCSA accredited for 22 CEUs.
