    Pre-Departure:

Prior to my departure to Helsinki, I did a lot of online research to get a good idea of where I was going to spend the following four months. I researched things like weather and how to prepare for it, people and what customs I should keep in mind, as well as general costs of living. In addition, the host university regularly sent us links to blog posts, which were quite helpful in addressing general concerns of exchange students. Especially when it came to packing wisely, the research helped me to take along the essentials, but not weigh myself down by things that were equally available in Finland. Thus, I did not take a big jacket or winter shoes, but only bought them in Helsinki, as the South African market would anyways not have equipped me for the Finnish winter climate. Although I do not know how my stay would have gone if I had not done this research, I felt well prepared when I made it to Helsinki.

PRE-DEPARTURE – OR, THE VERY LONG ADMIN SECTION, NEATLY COMPARTMENTALIZED

    Accommodation:

This is probably the most stressful admin matter to sort out before departure. Now, this is not dreadfully stressful in and of itself, except that, if you apply for accommodation through the FMEL, the student accommodation company, you will need to pay a security deposit (+/-1200chf) and the first month’s rent a month or so in advance, and in ZAR, it’s a scarily large amount. With regards to accommodation, the FMEL is definitely the simplest way to go, especially if you don’t have any contacts in Lausanne. The one disadvantage is that you don’t ultimately get to choose in which of the FMEL’s residences you’ll be staying, so you might strike lucky get it cheap (400-600chf per month) or, like me, end up in a more expensive, though slightly more fancy  residence (750chf).

    Pre-departure and arrival:

Preparing for my trip to Lausanne, Switzerland, was very exciting! Fortunately, the visa application process went smoothly and I received my visa within 1 month of applying. The hardest part of preparing for my trip was trying to fit everything I would need for a semester into one suitcase.
