Global Pathways, Local Impact

Empowering South Africans to engage confidently with China

The Confucius Institute at Stellenbosch University (CISU) was established in late 2004 as a partnership between Stellenbosch University and Xiamen University in China. Operating under Stellenbosch University International (SUI), CISU collaborates with Worcester Gymnasium and Rietenbosch Primary School through its Confucius Classrooms. It also runs a variety of outreach programmes with local primary and high schools, and engages in partnerships with communities, institutions and businesses.

What we offer:

Weekly Chinese language courses are offered to SU students, school learners as well as the broad Stellenbosch community throughout the year. Other CISU activities include:

  • Chinese language classes
  • Martial Arts classes
  • Chinese cultural events, festivals & day workshops
  • Support for mobility programmes to China.
  • Guidance on Chinese scholarship opportunities

Our Programmes

These include non-credit-bearing, semester-based Mandarin courses available at various proficiency levels for Stellenbosch University students, academic staff, and members of the public.
