Selection and language of instruction

Applicants will be considered for provisional selection to the BCom (Management Sciences) (Extended Curriculum Programme) if they meet the ECP’s admission requirements. Furthermore, students will get preference if they meet the socioeconomic status (SES) requirements of the University’s admission policy and the SES level determined by the Faculty. The University determines all applicants’ SES scores, and final admission depends on the available places.

Provisional selection means that the University admits you based on your Grade 11 marks on the condition that you meet the minimum requirements with your matric results.

For more information please send an email to the faculty (emsinfo@sun.ac.za).

For more information on the faculty’s language of instruction please see the Faculty’s Language Implementation Plan.

About the programme

The extended curriculum programme (ECP) aims to provide students with important skills and knowledge to learn and succeed at university. The programme adds value to – and builds on – students’ talents and strengths to realise their intellectual, career and personal aspirations.

How does it work?

The curriculum of the mainstream BCom (Management Sciences) programme takes three years to complete. The programme’s curriculum is extended by offering the first-year core modules over two years.

In the first year of study, you cover some of the curriculum’s first-year modules plus additional preparatory modules. The preparatory modules strengthen your academic foundation. Students are therefore required to pass these preparatory modules before proceeding to the following year of study.

The rest of the first-year modules are offered in the second year of study. After this year, you have completed the first year of the mainstream BCom (Management Sciences) curriculum. You can now handle the workload of the following years with confidence and may proceed with the mainstream second- and third-year curriculum.

After four years of study, students who complete this programme successfully obtain a full and equal BCom (Management Sciences) degree.

Read this flyer about the BCom (Management Sciences) Extended Curriculum Programme and students’ experiences. The flyer is also available in isiXhosa here.

How does one get admitted to this programme?

One can apply directly for the extended curriculum programme. You will be considered for the extended programme if you meet the ECP admission requirements.

What career opportunities do I come in line for with this qualification?

This BCom (Management Sciences) is the programme for students who wish to pursue a career in management. The programme offers a variety of focal areas that will largely determine your eventual career. A focal area’s suggested module combination is simply a recommendation to help students prepare for a career. See the Yearbook (page 32 – 42).
