Since its establishment in 1978, the Department of Journalism has delivered some of the most prominent and innovative media professionals in South Africa. The flagship programme of the department is the BAHons Journalism course – a one-year, full-time, postgraduate degree focused on equipping aspiring mediaworkers with the practical and critical thinking skills necessary for a successful career.

What is a “postgraduate” degree?

You can only do a postgraduate degree when you have already graduated with an undergraduate degree. This means you cannot study journalism at Stellenbosch University straight after matric, but only after you have successfully completed your undergraduate studies.

What do I need to study to get access to the journalism honours degree?

You can study any undergraduate programme (BA, BCom, BSc, etc.) of at least three years.

What are the selection criteria for getting into the journalism honours programme?

You need to pass your undergraduate degree. There is a selection test which evaluates your general knowledge and writing skills. If you do well enough in the test, you are invited for an interview.

How many people does the Department of Journalism accept every year?

The department only accepts 26 students into the journalism honours degree. This is a very practical programme where students get a lot of individual attention.

What can I do to improve my chances of getting accepted into the BAHons Journalism degree?

You could improve your chances of admission to the postgraduate degree by getting involved with campus media organizations during your undergraduate years, staying abreast of the news by reading, listening to, watching and following journalism outlets, and obtaining good grades for your undergraduate courses.
