Unfortunately Facebook and Twitter don’t fall into this category! However, in future, you will have free internet access to selected sites connected via the SANREN network.

One of the main objectives of SANREN is to promote research and improve communication for research at tertiary institutions. If you work closely with other institutions connected to this network, you can now access the http, https and ftp versions of the sites below for free –

VPN – your home connection

With the implementation of the new firewall”, the method for connecting to the internet at home, has also changed. If you’re one of the lucky ones who can work from home, you can follow the instructions below and in no time your internet will be up and running again.

For step by step instructions for the installation of the new VPN client, click here. If you are currently using the Checkpoint VPN (you’ll see a yellow key in the corner of your pc’s screen) first follow these instructions before installing the client. Just remember, this installation will not work if it’s done from campus. You need to be outside the university’s network.

If you use NXInetkey without VPN from home, it will be deactivated from 1 April due to security reasons. Follow the same installation procedures as the VPN users and install the new client.

Forgot your password (again!)

Do you have the IT service centre’s number on speed dial in case you forget or lose your password for the umpteenth time? Now you don’t have to anymore.

Thanks to a new application developed by IT you can change your password on any of the portals (for example http://my.sun.ac.za) by clicking on the “Forgot password” link on the first page. A temporary password can be assigned to you in any of the following ways:

  1. Your cellnumber
  2. An external email address (if you are alumni)
  3. Security questions and answers

Please remember that the system can only reset your password if we have the correct information as mentioned above.

Warning for 3G users: Risk of overspending on data accounts

Users are warned to practice caution when using certain providers’ 3G bundles on laptops. Some of these do not protect the user against overspending.

The risk of overspending occurs when users are under the false impression that their 3G package is safe to use until the package runs out. This is not necessarily the case. Higher costs can occur when the initial bundle’s capacity is exceeded and a much higher tariff kicks in. The user will then, without knowing, pay the higher tariff.

The risk of overspending is increased by software updating automatically and therefore generating more traffic. To avoid overspending ensure that the settings of your software updates are set to manual.

Another risk 3G users need to be aware of is the excessive cost of data overseas. Wireless in hotels is usually much more affordable than the local service provider’s roaming data options.

Users are strongly advised to limit the amount they want to spend or traffic they want to allow. (All this information can be found on your service provider’s website.) Also activate sms and email notifications when your data bundle is close to its limit. In this instance prepaid data is a considerably safer option.

3G users are encouraged to monitor their traffic and data usage on the 3G control programme, as well as the service provider’s website. Preferably switch off the 3G facility when it’s not being used.
