How much does a short course cost and can it be deducted from my student account?

The cost of short courses is R625 for South African and SADC students and R1875 for international students. The cost of the Graduate Programme is R925 and R2775 for international students.
Various payment options are available. The fees can also be debited to your student account.

What is the duration of the short course?

The semester-long short courses take place once a week for about 8 – 10 weeks. Short courses are offered in a hybrid format, which includes online sessions via MS Teams. 

What is the application process?

All applications are administered through the Division of Short Course’s application process. Participants complete the application link (provided by the FVZSI team). Once your application is submitted, it is reviewed whereafter the FVZSI team will contact you with all the relevant information including the payment information and the date of commencement of the short course.

What is the short course qualification?

The FVZSI short courses are recognised as a registered training opportunity at Stellenbosch University. Upon successful completion, participants will receive recognition on the academic transcript.

Are bursaries available?

There are limited bursaries available and will be allocated on a needs basis. Bursaries are also offered by e.g. Residences, Clusters, Academic Affairs Council, SRC, TSR, TPSC, Societies, etc.

Apart from formalised leadership short courses, what are the other offerings available to youth leaders in South Africa?

a) LSAL

The Leadership Summit for Aspiring Leaders (LSAL) was launched in 2020 to broaden engagement around leadership beyond portfolio training, and to challenge the hierarchical construct of leadership within Higher Education institutions. LSAL places an emphasis on the individual to ensure that they are responsible for the development of their leadership journey. This online summit is open to any aspiring student leader and runs for over 1 month. Participants receive recognition on the academic transcript.

b) LIC

The Leadership in Context (LiC) programme, sponsored by the Abe Bailey Trust, was launched in 2018 to connect youth leaders at South African Higher Education institutions to broaden engagement around the hierarchical construct of leadership in Higher Education spaces. LiC places an emphasis on what is required to lead in context and to provide youth leaders exposure to the opportunities and challenges of different student leadership spaces. Accountable leadership remains a key theme. This online summit is open to any aspiring student leader and runs over a 1-month period. Participants receive recognition on the academic transcript.

c) Critical Engagement

FVZSI has an extensive range of various critical engagement opportunities which ranges from the annual FVZS Honorary Lecture, a Masterclass series and international partnerships with e.g., Doha Debates and discourses on key themes related to democracy, human rights, and social justice.
