Situated in the heart of the Cape Winelands, Stellenbosch University has a long history of engagement with the sciences of the vine and wine and is closely associated with the South African grape and wine industry. The Department of Viticulture and Oenology (DVO) is the only University-based department in South Africa that offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in Grapevine and Wine Sciences.

The integration of the two disciplines, together with analytical chemistry, sensory science and data analysis generates study and research opportunities for students from diverse academic backgrounds. In the more than 100 years of the DVO’s existence, we have produced many of the grape (including table grapes) and wine industries top viticulturists, oenologists, researchers, supplier managers, etc.

What does viticulture and oenology mean?

Viticulture means growing grapes (for making wine or for eating) and oenology means making wine. Do watch the presentation to learn more.

How long is the BScAgric Viticulture and Oenology degree?

Four years.

Do you need Physical Science in grade 12 to study BScAgric Viticulture and Oenology?

Yes, you need both Mathematics and Physical Science

Can I study BScAgric Viticulture and Oenology if I have Mathematical Literacy at school?

No, unfortunately pure Mathematics is a requirement. You can apply for a BAgric degree at the Elsenburg Agricultural College, situated 10km outside Stellenbosch, if you have Mathematical Literacy. Have a look at their presentation to learn more.

What are the admission requirements (i.e. school subjects and relevant grades) for the Viticulture and Oenology programme?

60% average for the NSC (excluding Life Orientation), 4 (50%) for English or Afrikaans, 5 (60%) for Mathematics and 4 (50%) for Physical Science. Please note: The University can change these minimum requirements at any given time.

Please note that only a limited number of students can be accommodated and meeting the requirements unfortunately does not guarantee a place in the programme.

If I do not follow the NSC curriculum, what are the requirements?

Matriculation exemption with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry is required.

Is this degree offered at Elsenburg?

The BScAgric Grapevine and Wine Sciences programme (4 years) is offered by Stellenbosch University (SU) on the Stellenbosch campus. Elsenburg Agricultural College, a separate institution, offers a 3-year BAgric degree in Cellar Technology, or Cellar Management, endorsed by SU, as well as a 3-year Diploma programme in Agriculture.

How practical is the degree?

The degree has both theoretical and practical aspects. There are practical sessions in all modules where you go on industry visits, are taught how to put the theory into practice and acquire various skills. In the final year the first six months is an industry internship, which is mostly practical.

What career options do I have if I study BScAgric Viticulture and Oenology?

Can I only be a winemaker?

Would I be able to work internationally?

Yes, you could. There are many countries (including the USA, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Germany) where grapes and wine are produced – you could potentially end up working in any of these countries. Out students are also sought after in these countries.

Are there bursaries available?

Yes. The Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (previously know as Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries) offers comprehensive bursaries to students. You can also apply via the University webpage for financial assistance. 

Are there jobs available immediately after completion of studies? Sometimes the perception is that there isn’t.

Yes. With the industry internship in the final year, we often see that students are asked to return for at least another harvest in the following year and this could lead to permanent employment as well. 

Can I register directly for a Master’s degree after completing a BScAgric Grapevine and Wine Sciences degree?

Yes, you can. You have to meet the minimum requirements for the Master’s degree studies.
