The Antarctic Legacy of South Africa logo has been designed to suggest a group of Antarctic nunataks in Dronning Maud Land retreating into the far distance, placed behind a stylised polar tent as used in the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. The logo can also be interpreted as representing the volcanic peaks and scoria cones of South Africa’s Marion Island rising out of the Southern Ocean. Lastly, the shades of blue on a clean white background suggest the ice and snow of the Antarctic Continent and the blue of its encircling ocean, as well as harking to the (relatively) pristine environments that can be found “down south”.
The ALSA Learning Zone
The colourful South African flag version of the logo has been specifically designed to identify the educational Learning Zone section on the ALSA website. It will be used during presentations to schools that aim to increase awareness of South Africa’s Antarctic legacy – and of its South African National Antarctic Programme – among the country’s youth.
ALSA mementos
The ALSA logo has started to appear on various items of memorabilia that are used during presentations as mementos and also as thank-you gifts to those who have been helping build up the ALSA archive with photographs, oral interviews, diaries and the like of their times within SANAP.
