Season’s Greetings from the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa

As we approach the end of another remarkable year, the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA) extends our heartfelt thanks and warmest season’s greetings to all of our followers, supporters, and stakeholders. We reflect on 2024 with gratitude for the continued support from our local South African Antarctic community and our esteemed international colleagues who make our work possible.

A Year of Accomplishments and Collaboration

This year has been one of growth, collaboration, and exploration as we continue to preserve and share South Africa’s rich history of Antarctic and Southern Ocean research. We’ve had the privilege of working alongside passionate researchers, explorers, and enthusiasts who are dedicated to furthering the legacy of South Africa’s contribution to polar science.

Some key highlights include:

  • The ongoing preservation of South Africa’s Antarctic involvement.
  • New projects aimed at sharing these valuable stories through educational outreach, ensuring that future generations appreciate and learn from the work done in these extreme environments at open days and exhibitions
  • The launch of the publication Marionthroughthelens by Sean Evans and Tavis Dalton
  • Attending the SCAR biannual conference, giving oral and poster presentations and held workshops. 1500 marketing material to attendees of the conference

We couldn’t have done this without the incredible dedication and hard work from the research teams, our partners, and all those who help bring our mission to life.

A Heartfelt Thank You

We are immensely grateful for the unwavering support we have received this year. To all of our social media followers, thank you for your continued engagement, interest, and enthusiasm. Your likes, shares, and comments help spread awareness of the critical work being done in the Antarctic, and your passion inspires us to keep moving forward.

To our stakeholders — from research institutions, government agencies, and Government departments (DSTI, DFFE), to our international partners — we thank you for your collaboration and commitment to advancing polar research and conservation.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As we enter 2025, we are filled with optimism and excitement for what the year will bring. The Antarctic and Southern Ocean research community continues to grow, and South Africa remains at the forefront of this important work. Our commitment to advancing knowledge, protecting the environment, and fostering a greater understanding of these remote regions will only strengthen as we move forward.

To all our friends in the South African Antarctic community and beyond, we wish you a joyous festive season and all the very best in the new year. May 2025 be a year of continued collaboration, discovery, and success in all your endeavours.

Thank you once again for your dedication and support. We look forward to another year of shared exploration and achievement.

Happy Holidays and a Prosperous New Year!

Warm regards,
The Antarctic Legacy of South Africa
