On March 5, 2022, the world celebrated the discovery of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, resting 3,008 meters beneath the icy expanse of Antarctica’s Weddell Sea. This remarkable find came 107 years after the vessel was trapped and sunk by dense pack ice during Shackleton’s famed 1914-1917 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition.
Central to this historic expedition was the South African research vessel, S.A. Agulhas II. Equipped with state-of-the-art technology, the ship played a pivotal role in navigating the treacherous Antarctic waters, enabling researchers to locate and document the Endurance in its final resting place.
The discovery not only reignited interest in Shackleton’s legendary voyage but also inspired a new generation of explorers and storytellers. In October 2024, National Geographic premiered the documentary “Endurance,” directed by Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. The film masterfully intertwines archival footage from the original expedition with contemporary visuals of the shipwreck, offering viewers a profound connection to the past. The film debuted at the BFI London Film Festival on October 12, 2024, followed by a UK-wide cinema release on October 14. Subsequently, it became available for streaming on Disney+, allowing audiences worldwide to engage with this extraordinary tale of endurance and exploration.
“As member of #Endurance22 I get to attend the Premiere of the documentary at the BFI London Film Festival on 12 October! Finally, videography and a narrative to convey this vexing history and an experience which I cannot express in words” – Prof Annie Bekker
The successful discovery of the Endurance and the subsequent documentary underscore the enduring human spirit of exploration and the relentless pursuit of knowledge, bridging the past and present in a captivating narrative.
