Meteorologists at Gough Island celebrating World Meteorology Day 2025

Gough Overwintering team 70 Meteorological Technicians celebrating World Meteorological Day at Gough Island in the mid-South Atlantic Ocean, 2500KM away from Cape Town. A weather station has been operating on Gough Island since 1956. It is operated as part of the network of the South African Weather Service (SAWS). (Scroll down for videos)
Indeed in South Africa, SAWS is the voice for weather and climate forecasting and also a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). The meteorological technicians perform daily weather observation, quality control of climate data, scientific research assigned by ocean and coast, monthly conformance and verification of the Automatic Weather Station (AWS) instruments.
