From 6 to 12 May, we celebrate Library Week — a perfect opportunity to highlight the vital role of books, and knowledge-sharing in preserving our collective heritage. The Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA) invites the public, especially children and young learners, to explore the incredible history of South Africa’s involvement in the Antarctic region — a story that spans from the heroic age of exploration to our present-day scientific contributions.South Africa has played a pivotal role in the Southern Ocean and Antarctic region for over a century. From early whaling stations and historic expeditions to today’s cutting-edge research at SANAE IV and on Marion and Gough Islands, our polar legacy is both rich and ongoing. ALSA is proud to document and preserve this history through a growing list of publications available since 2015.
This Library Week, we especially encourage teachers, students, and learners to delve into this fascinating part of South African heritage. Whether you are doing a school project, planning a classroom activity, or simply curious about our icy frontier, ALSA is here to help.
Visit our website to browse our publications or get in touch with us directly for more information and resources. Let’s work together to inspire the next generation of polar enthusiasts! The only fictional book in the ALSA publication series (left)
