This year, the Antarctic Legacy of South Africa (ALSA) proudly joins the global archival community in celebrating International Archives Week (IAW2025), taking place from 9 to 13 June, under the theme #ArchivesAreAccessible: Archives for Everyone.
At the heart of this year’s theme is a powerful message: accessibility is a necessity. As the world continues to embrace digital transformation, archives must evolve to be more inclusive, discoverable, and useful to broader audiences. ALSA has long been committed to this vision.
Our open-access digital repository, which now houses over 25,000 items, is a testament to that commitment. From photographs, documents, and personal narratives to rare publications and scientific reports, the ALSA archive captures the rich history and ongoing legacy of South Africa’s involvement in Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
By making these resources freely available online, ALSA empowers researchers, educators, students, and the general public—locally and internationally—to explore and connect with this unique heritage. Whether you’re in Cape Town, Antarctica, or anywhere in between, the archive is just a click away.
As we celebrate IAW2025, we reaffirm our dedication to ensuring that Antarctica’s stories are accessible to everyone, now and into the future.
