The spirit of midwinter is felt just as strongly in South Africa. Across South Africa, the SANAP community—including family members, research collaborators, and former overwintering personnel—gathers to mark this special time of year. Midwinter weekend is a cherished tradition, with many sharing stories, memories, and photographs from their time on the ice or the sub-Antarctic islands. These celebrations not only rekindle personal connections but also strengthen the enduring bonds between generations of South Africans who have contributed to polar science and exploration. The shared joy and reflection create a powerful sense of continuity and belonging within this unique community.
