In Memory of Mokete Makhanya – SANAE 55

It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of Mokete David Makhanya, a valued member of the SANAE 55 overwintering team, who departed this life on 30 July 2025.

Mokete was part of S55 team as communications engineer stationed at the South African National Antarctic Expedition (SANAE IV) base, where he served with dedication, resilience, and a spirit of camaraderie that left a lasting impact on those around him. His contribution reflects not only professional commitment, living and working in one of the world’s most challenging environments.

The ALSA community, together with the broader South African National Antarctic Programme (SANAP) family, extends heartfelt condolences to Mokete’s family, friends, and fellow team members.
