This day in history: the Polarbjørn arrives at Polarsirkel Bukta, Antarctica with the first SANAE team in 1960

On 3 December 1959 the 486-ton Norwegian sealer Polarbjørn sailed from Cape Town for Antarctica.  Chartered by the South African Government she carried the 10-person first South African National Antarctic Expedition overwintering team (SANAE 1) under the leadership of veteran Johannes Jacobus 'Hannes' la Grange (13 October 1927 - 21 April 1999).  Hannes was the first South African to reach the South Pole - with the 1955/58 Commonwealth Trans Antarctic Expedition - and in the first half of the 1950s had undertaken…

This day in history: The S.S. Gamtoos sails to build South Africa’s first weather station on Marion Island in 1948

Following South Africa’s annexation of Marion and Prince Edward Islands at the turn of the year, the S.S. Gamtoos, the Department of Commerce’s coastal steamer, left Cape Town on 12 January 1948 with hut sections aboard to build Marion’s first weather station.  Also shipped were an extra 100 tons of coal in bags to add to the 160 tons in the bunkers, to give the ship an extended endurance of 25 days. This day in history: Marion du Fresne rediscovers the Prince Edward Islands in 1772

On 13 January 1772 Marc-Macé Marion du Fresne with Le Mascarin and the Le Marquis de Castries (Le Chevalier du Clesmeur) on a southern voyage of discovery that commenced in Mauritius rediscovered two islands in the southern Indian Ocean.  He named them Ile de l’Espérance (now Marion Island) and Ile de la Caverne (now Prince Edward island, after the large cave visible from the sea in Cave Bay). This day in history: South Africa raises the flag on Prince Edward Island in a formal ceremony of annexation

Prince Edward Island from the H.M.S.A.S. Natal, 24 January 1948 On 24 January 1948, South Africa conducted a ceremony ashore on Prince Edward Island to proclaim that: “His Majesty’s sovereignty of Marion Island and Prince Edward Island is henceforth to be exercised by his Majesty’s Government in the Union of South Africa.  God Save the King”. This day in history: the R.S.A. reaches the ice shelf on its maiden Antarctic voyage in 1962

This day in history: South Africa holds a formal ceremony ashore on Marion Island to complete the annexation of the Prince Edward Islands in 1948

Following on from the ceremony claiming Prince Edward Island for South Africa on 24 January 1948,  a similar formal ceremony was held on Marion Island on the 26th. The proclamation ceremony was conducted above Boulder Beach near Gunner’s Point by Lieutenant Commander Richard Paul Dryden-Dymond, Officer Commanding the frigate H.M.S.A.S. This day in history: South Africa’s first fatality “’down south”. Joseph Daniels drowns off Marion Island in 1948

On 29 January 1948 the S.S. Gamtoos was off-loading the last of its cargo of materials to build the first weather station on Marion Island, following the island’s formal annexation only three days previously.  The modus operandi was for materials to be loaded onto or towed behind “flat boom” boats borrowed from the Department of Commerce’s Government Guano Islands which were then towed to the breaker’s edge off Boulder Beach by the ship’s motor boat Aqua.  The flat booms then…

This day in history: Officer-in-Charge Allan Crawford of Marion Island’s first overwintering team goes ashore in 1948

On 02 February 1948 Allan Bryant Crawford went ashore on Marion Island for the first time.  He had travelled south to the island on the frigate H.M.S.A.S. Good Hope under the command of Commander H.G. Fougstedt along with members of Marion’s first overwintering team (M1), for which he was (as then called) Officer-in-Charge. This day in history: the SAS Drakensberg sails to rescue a rudderless S.A. Agulhas in 1992

On 13 December 1991 South Africa’s then Antarctic supply and research ship the r.v. S.A. Agulhas suffered rudder damage while in pack ice near the SANAE Base in Antarctica.  The German research icebreaker Polarstern came to her assistance and by February the S.A. Agulhas had been freed from the pack ice.
